I just watched this and it's very pretty. That's funny than Tex Avery and Duck Amuck can refering. But it's like too a 1930's silent short.

And some random clip on YouTube of some guy analyzing some of Tezuka's manga including W3.

I just watched Broken Down Film and thought it was great. I have not seem much of Tezuka's work, maybe I have some catching up to do...
I would love if more Japanese animator's would take more chances with their animation. There is a lot of untapped potential in that country in my opinion. |

Osamu Tezuka is a fan of Fleischers shorts. I agree Broken Down Film is like one of Fleischers shorts (especially Betty Boop shorts) Actually, cowboy and girl is like Betty and Bimbo, Koko. Many Betty Boop shorts dealing with Bimbo and Koko save Betty from bad guy story line. So, resemblance right there. But, I still believe Broken Down Film is more like Duck Amuck-ish. Overall tone of Broken Down Film is certainly resemblance of Chuck Jones crowning masterpiece. And, many gags used for Broken Down Film is truly trademark Avery style.
Here's some gag spoilers - so if you didin't see it, don't read below. For example, cowboy plugs hair from corner of screen scene is almost homage to Avery's classic hair gag. What about horse riding by alone and cowboy sat in the air ending scene. I think Tezuka really loves golden age cartoons. His love shows everywhere. Avery, Jones, Fleischers etc. Broken Down Film is one great homage to one of animation history's prime highlights. |
