Every report has said that these are going to be Chronological releases. Since the Famous Popeyes will all be released by the third or fourth set, it seems unnecessary and pointless for them to release any on the first set as well, where they would have no place. In short, though I have no inside knowledge, it seems the answer is no. Besides, I think a lot of people like the '50s Popeyes, though not as much as the 30s and 40s Popeyes. Perhaps you were asking about the KFS TV Popeyes? If so, go to this set: here. I don't have it, but that's where you can find 'em.

Actually Josh, while I own that set of KFS TV Popeyes and enjoy them more than I probably should, I believe the plan is to eventually redistribute them in a complete collection in chronological order. How and through whom, I'm not sure. But it was my understanding fromt he last WB chat at the Home Theater Forum, that they mentioned even the complete TV shorts would see a chronological release. I think they may have flat out purchased the distro rights from KFS for ALL the Popeye-related animated cartoons. So that might get reissued in a more comprehensive form int he future.

That's interesting, I hadn't heard that about the TV cartoons. Whether or not that's the case however, that shouldn't affect the answer to "mighty mouse's" question, since it would seem strange to include Famous studio Popeye's on Vol. 1 of a Chronological edition, when they would be released later anyways, right?...

Vol. 1 will basically be the William Costello Popeyes, with a few of the early Jack Mercer-voiced ones at the end. It will pretty much cover the initial development period of the Sailor Man at Fleischer. Vol. 2 will cover the late 30s, when the series really hit its stride, and possibly the first year of shorts coming out of Miami, before they suffered a slight downturn in quality in the early 1940s.

All of this raises some interesting points.

I do remember the made for TV Popeyes being part of the deal. Possibly, KFS insisted on getting their own stuff released through a major studio as a condition to signing off on using the character.

Will complete DVD sets of the TV shorts sell? This is where maybe it might make more sense to include some of them on each of the sets, since I doubt they'd move a number of units comparable to the theatricals.

One of my ASIFA-SF newsletters from a few months ago (maybe September?) has a quote from Jerry saying that the order will be as follows:

VOLUME 1: First 60 Fleischers, including 2 of the 3 Technicolor 2-reelers
VOLUME 2: Remainder of B&W Fleischers (and Aladdin), plus all 14 B&W Famous (63 total)
VOLUME 3: Famous Studios, color, 1940s (46 total)
VOLUME 4: Famous Studios, color, 1950s (62 total)

See, that's essentially what I've read, only more specific. I've heard of no plans to release the TV Popeyes, although that doesn't mean they won't. Whether WB now owns those or not doesn't mean they have plans to release them as part of this Chronological collection.

From what you post here, I hope Vol. 3 is a bit cheaper, since it looks like only a 3-discer....

I guess that horrible H-B series will eventually be released as well.
