I got mine at Sam's Club last night.

I agree with what's been posted about the set so far. Not that these are the greatest cartoons in the history of the world, but certainly a classier presentation would have been in order.

How can they call this "complete" in any sense? I don't get that. (I like the blurb that says "Includes the Modern Madcaps!" As if that's a big deal, as if their "target" audience would even know what that means.)

Thanks to the compiler of that list that showed up here not long ago. That's a big help. Indeed, the shorts are not listed anywhere on the set. Yeah, it's cool that they reprinted a Casper and Wendy comic on the inside of the case, but that space could have been used to, let's see...list the contents, maybe?

Even if they would have just mastered the cartoons they have, from Harvey prints with at least the complete vintage Harvey titles, that would have been better than this. Admirably, they substituted different cartoons in certain "episodes" where they would have duplicated other shorts elsewhere in the set (though evidently they missed one after all) but to have the "vintage 1998" show openings and closings and the (largely) redundant "Toon Takes" kind of defeats the purpose; they are taking up space that could have been better used by including complete prints of the shorts already on the set, or maybe even adding some additional cartoons which didn't make the cut. Even with the delay, it still seems like a rush job. (I wonder if delaying the set's release for a year had to do with someone noticing "Oh gee, there are a bunch of cartoons that show up multiple times in these shows...let's just use the individual cartoon masters with full titles...no, better yet, let's sit down and reformat a bunch of the half-hours to substitute other cartoons in there. Whoops! One cartoon with complete titles slipped in by accident! You're fired!")

It is better than what was out there previously, which was a handful of Casper discs, sourced from the same TV masters. (Though there are some titles included on those discs which are missing from the new "complete" set).

Still generally better overall than what I've come to expect from Classic Media (eg any of the Total TV stuff).

So anybody who has the set already, play these discs without the problems the dual sided disc format is dreaded for ?

I went through all the discs looking for a particular short which wasn't included and they played fine. Dual layered dual sided discs have never given me a problem though.

I just read here that the short was Crumley Cogswell, which was the short I really wanted was omited. Anyone know why? Did they find if offensive I wonder?

How much did you finally pay at Sam's Club? I'm a BJs member, but my neighbor has a Sam's membership. Worse case, I have a gift cert. for Amazon.

Thanks

Rich

I have had just as much of a problem with the disks that SONY uses as any of the other double sided disks. However, I haven't had a problem with any that were produced lately. Maybe they have improved them. (I would still rather have single sided disks.)

Today (11/9) went to WalMart, Borders, Best Buy and Target and didn't see it nor anything else about it...although there's plenty of Cars and Over the Hedge if you want . Clerks also hadn't heard about it. I will most likely go the Amazon route.

By the way, if you missed it, about a year ago there was some original artwork posted from a few cartoons that appear in the current DVD (and at least one that does not appear, e.g., Chew Chew Baby) in the following thread, specifically pages 3 and 6:

Sorry to get O. T. here, but what is wrong with Cars? Okay, so it may not be the best Pixar movie, but this and Over the Hedge were best of the otherwise lucklusters animated filems released this year (though Flushed Away is going to be put on hold, since it looks okay).

Nothing wrong with them at all! I was only comparing the first two's enormous and ubiquitous physical DVD presence to the absolute nonexistent physical presence of the Harveytoons DVD. Apologies if my comment was misinterpreted.

To explain further, and risk being more OT, I haven't seen Cars, but I have seen both Over The Hedge and Flushed Away -- with my son -- and enjoyed them both...Flushed Away especially. Personally, I felt that Hedge had technically better animation (ot at least a better display of animation) but I more enjoyed Flushed as I feel it flowed quite nicely in a more simple, genial and easy manner -- I felt like I had a better time as I left the theater.

Getting more On Topic re the Harveytoons DVD, but more of a personal issue, is the fact that my 10-year-old has, and will only, know his grandfather through his work in retrospect (which has even given me an appreciation for Scooby Do); so while my son can become excited with the occasional cartoon that pops up bearing his name, when Classic Media had the opportunity, not only is the DVD incomplete in content but I cannot even find it in any store in the week of its release! So, I was likely lamenting aloud the irony and personal disappointment of that in comparison to the easy access of the other movies' I mentioned, but did not mean to diminish the quality of those movies themselves.

Gee, I understand your post now.
Anyway I wish Classic Media did a better job on Harveytoons and included one of my favorite cartoons your grandfather wrote, "No Ifs, Ands, Or Butts" (1954).
