Default Official Harveytoons - The Complete Collection DVD Talkback Thread (w/ Full Contents)

Welcome to the official GAC talkback thread for Harveytoons - The Complete Collection DVD set which will be released on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2006. All discussion and talkback relating to this DVD set may be posted here. Below you will find the full contents of what is included on all 4 discs.

Here are the contents of the Harveytoons DVD set. There are 52 half-hours on the set. There are no contents listed anywhere (so you may want to print this out when you get a copy). Wow, thanks for typing all this up!

I'm still undecided... too bad there are so many Casper repeats.

Wow, that's an amazing job of typing, Jon. If anyone deserved to win that set, you did!

I will buy the set, because at under $30 it's an amazing bargain. Less than 25 cents per cartoon. But it's a shame there are so many cartoons represented only as excerpts. Among them, 2 Caspers (one of them the very first in his own series), 3 , 2 , etc. I really hope Classic will give us a supplementary set with the shortened toons in complete form.

Comparing Jon's list against the Famous listings in the BCDB, I see that Tommy Tortoise and Moe Hare really get the shaft - of their 6 cartoons, 1 isn't there, and 2 are only shown as excerpts! So that's only 50% of their shorts in complete form. I've always heard their cartoons aren't that good (I've never seen one) but still, do they deserve that kind of treatment?

Here's how the other major characters fare, by my calculations:

Casper - 51 of his 53 theatrical shorts are complete, or 96%
Audrey - 7 of her 10, or 70%
Huey - 10 of his 12, or 83%
Buzzy - 6 of 7 (one short - "No Ifs, Ands or Buts" - is missing), or 85%
Herman & Katnip - 27 complete shorts, 3 abridged, and 1 missing - 87 %

Overall, I'd say Classic Media gets a "B" on the basis of these statistics.

I'm really looking forward to this set, if not for the Herman & Katnip cartoons alone!

Btw, does anyone offhand have a list of contents for that Papa John's DVD exclusive from a couple of year's back? Without going through the trouble of firing up the projector and popping it in to run through every short, I'm just curious if all of the content from that disc is repeated here and if it'd be safe for me to part with it now that Classic Media has released this set?

Thanks!

Someone feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

By my count, there are 15 Harvey-owned cartoons that are completely missing from this DVD set:

Sing Again Of Michigan
Slip Us Some Redskin
No If's Ands or Butts - Buzzy
Chew Chew Baby
Fun On Furlough - Herman & Katnip
Trigger Treat
Peck Your Own Home
Turning The Fables - Tommy Tortoise & Moe Hare
Northern Mites
Terry the Terror
In The Nicotine
Abner The Baseball
The Plot Sickens
Crumley Cogwell
Giddy Gadgets

There are 42 cartoons that are presented as excerpts only ("Harvey Toon Takes").

In the end, we got a grand total of 165 full-length cartoons on this set (166 if you count the repeat of "Party Smarty").

Applying percentages again, we get 165 of a possible 222 full-length cartoons, or 74.3 % of the total.

No, it looks like all the Caspers are from the theatrical releases of the 50s. None of the made-for-TV Caspers are there.

Darn, wanted some 60s caspers with the nightmare horse, but this is still a decent release as it is.
