Default Van Beuren's Tom and Jerry on DVD!

Some more Van Beuren-related news to follow up on the recent Cubby release. Currently 99 Cents Only Stores are offering one of the best deals I've seen ever: a DVD of the Van Beuren Tom and Jerry shorts for (you guessed it) only 99 cents! What a bargain!

For more information check out the Cartoon Brew and don't miss the ASIFA-HOLLYWOOD showing of these rare cartoons as hosted by Jerry Beck and Mark Kausler (more details here).

Is this the same DVD? What cartoons are on it?

That looks like the same DVD. Notice that the Amazon.com description says that the cartoons are "sound enhanced."

As a matter a fact it IS! I'm not sure exactly what cartoons are on it, but according to Jerry Beck, the prints are pretty good - worth picking up for a buck if you're a first timer of the Van Beuren shorts.

Thanks for posting that, I'll have to order my copy as soon as possible!

(another note - the description on Amazon seems a bit off - "Two of the most popular cartoon creations ever are together again in this one-of-a-kind collection of their most fun-filled escapades of cat-and-mouse games")

The description is probably intentionally misleading.

Unless you post on this board, you probably only know about one Tom and Jerry.

Sure people who buy that DVD will be angry, but how angry can you get over $1.49?

On a side note, were the Van Beuren Tom & Jerry considered "Silent" cartoons or did they have sound a la the very early Disney (i.e. mostly music and the occasional sound effect)?

Tom and Jerry were usually pantomime characters and rarely ever spoke (much like the MGM T&J and the Pink Panther). The only major exception is "Plane Dumb" which was originally planned as a Miller and Lyles cartoon anyway.

I've seen other DVDs from the company that did these in Dollar Tree stores in my area, but not this one. Actually the stuff with this label has mostly been old TV shows and movies more than cartoons, and most of the cartoons had more colorful covers and were called the Treasure Box Collection. Who makes these DVDs anyway? There is no indication of what company does them anywhere on the package.

I recently made a successful bid on eBay for this DVD. For 99 cents (although it costs a lot more to ship to the UK ), it seems a good opportunity to own a few more Tom & Jerry cartoons.

I ran down to the 99 Cent Only Store that just opened up here a few weeks ago yesterday after reading this thread, and got this DVD. Here's what's listed as being on it, haven't watched it all yet:

1. Piano Tooners
2. Fireman's Life
3. In the Bag
4. Pencil Mania
5. Swiss Truck
6. Plane Dumb
7. Pots and Pans
8. Rocketeers
9. Spanish Twist

I also picked up a second DVD, entitled Van Beuren Classic Cartoons. Here's what's on it:

1. Bold King Cole
2. Cat Canary
3. Croon Crazy
4. Cupid Gets His Man
5. Frisky Frolics
6. Gay Gaucho
7. Hunting Season
8. It's a Greek Life
9. It's a Greek Life (Spanish)

Both are described on the package as Digitally Remastered/Sound Enhanced.

Hope this helps, and thanks for the heads up on this one's existence.
