Default Golden Collection Volume III Rumor

At the Animation History forum, Steve Worth ("Bigshot") made a scary post about the upcoming Looney Tunes Golden Collection. He says someone told him the set will have lots of DVNR, and some of the original colors will be changed.

Is it true? I dunno - two of cartoons he mentioned, "Gorilla My Dreams" and "The Big Snooze," actually appeared on volume two. Both did indeed have some sort of blurriness/DVNR problem. It seems a little odd that they would let the quality drop off so dramatically after two very good volumes, but you never know.

Of course, it could just be some kind of early April Fools joke.

Jack

Jack, please allow me to post the comments by our friend Pastor Steve.

Pastor Steve writes:
I spoke to someone today who got to see some of the upcoming Looney Tunes DVD set.I asked him how the set looked and he said, "Good News and bad news...but mostly bad news."

The good enw is that it includes a bunch of my favorite cartoons like Gorilla Of My Dreams, Falling Hare and Gruesome Twosome. The bad news is that the transfers are MASSIVELY DVNR'ed.Lines blur out all over the place, and it's painfully obvious even at speed.Falling Hare and The Big Snooze are completely mangled.

But that isn't the worst...In Gruesome Twosome,, they've painted the naked Tweety YELLOW.Yep, you heard me right. They digitally painted the pink Tweety to make him look yellow.Don't ask me why they did that.I don't know.It truly boggles my mind to even think about it...

I don't know about you, but that makes me madder than the bee Tweety slaps around in that cartoon. It's obvious that the folks in charge of home video at Warner Bros have absolutely no clue what people really want, and no respect for the cartoon themselves.

If anyone has an address to write to, please post it.Cartoon fans should get them to fix this BEFORE it comes out.Once they press all those DVDs, they'll never be able to fix it.If we accept stuff like this, it will just get worse in the future releases.

Pass the word...

Se ya
Steve

I honestly can't say if this is an April fool's joke, but I hope it is, but they way they're handling the "Tom And Jerry" situation, I guess anything's possible.

While Steve is a very knowlegeable guy, I'm not holding my breath on his story. The source seems to have all their cartoons mixed up, bringing up shorts from the second volume, so it's not that reliable.

Judging by the Post, Volume 3 is going to either have some Double Dips, or Steve recieved some bum information (Assume the LAtter, at least until Jerry is allowed to comment otherwise)

Ugh. I guess, if the rumor is valid, the idea is that they want to make him look more like the more familiar, Freling-era Tweety so as not to confuse the Joe Sixpack/kids-'n'-moms demographic WB apparently still sees as comprising the main LT/MM audience.

Answer to all your Question's Fellas, Jerry Beck (ON the Cartoon Research Website) sez that Tweety IS yellow in A Gruesome Twosome (At least he's supposed to be, anyway).

I'll post his quote momentarily

Edit: Here You Go

"In THE GRUESOME TWOSOME Tweety IS yellow. He is pink in the first two Clampett's (A TALE OF TWO KITTIES and A GRUESOME TWOSOME).

The person who did an audio commentary today brought in the second volume to point out the DVNR in it (that explains the reference to GORILLA MY DREAMS and THE BIG SNOOZE - FALLING HARE is planned for Volume 3, but the copy screened for commentary may have been the original test film restored from the neg years ago - that one (and ACROBATTY BUNNY) were heavily DVNR'd and were done as tests years ago - clips of them were used on several "Sing-Along" videos - as far as I know they are not using that copy for the final Golden Collection dvd). "

So You have nothing to worry about (And quite a bit to look foward to.

I think that Gruesome Twosome thing is a lie. According to Jerry Beck, Tweety IS yellow in that toon. It's just hard to tell because copies of the short that's currently in circulation are pretty bad.

Jerry also says that the heavily DVNR'd shorts were made as tests and were also used for historians to make commentries. They just watched it to make comments about the shorts.

How include again GORILLA MY DREAMS and BIG SNOOZE in the new set? I think it's on in the wave 2

Once again, Jerry Beck quells my fears...so, I suppose we can now confirm the presence of "Acrobatty Bunny" on Volume 3. That's one more McKimson classic restored!

Wait, something isn't quite right here. He says that in The Gruesome Twosome Tweety is yellow, then says he is pink in it!
I think he meant Birdy and the Beast for the second pink one.

But putting that aside, isn't The Gruesome Twosome the one where the Durante cat calls Tweety the "naked genius"? I think he was pink in this one also - or am I misremembering something?

I-I-I know what you're gonna say son. When two halves is gone there's nuthin' left - and you're right. It's a little ol' worm who wasn't there. Two nuthins is nuthin'. That's mathematics son. You can argue with me but you can't argue with figures. Two half nuthins is a whole nuthin'.
