SYNOPSIS
‘The Banana Splits Adventure Hour’ was a Saturday morning series from Hanna-Barbera
shown on NBC in the late 1960’s. Each show would revolve around a meeting of the members
of the ‘Banana Splits Club’, and Fleegle, Bingo, Drooper and Snorky would double up as a
musical quartet, reminiscent of The Beatles and The Monkees. The characters were played by
actors in fleecy costumes, similar to later Sid and Marty Krofft characters, such as H.R.
Pufnstuf.
The episodes consisted of skits, cartoons, a live-action cliffhanger serial called Danger Island
(directed by Richard Donner, who went on to helm the Superman and Lethal Weapon films),
and of course, musical performances. In total, some 23 bubblegum tunes were produced for
the show; one was even written by soul crooner Barry White. In 1968, Decca issued an LP,
We’re The Banana Splits, collecting a dozen of the program's performances; the series' theme,
"The Tra-La-La Song," even reached the Billboard Top 100 singles chart. In addition, Kellogg's
issued an eight-song double EP pack, available only through the company for two cereal box
tops and 50 cents.

Interesting. Well, I suppose one of two things happened. Either they figure they can put out something of lower quality in Britain and get away with it, or someone over there paid for the restoration. If they have been restored, then I would expect to see an American release of this title.

Didnt WHV issue a press release of some sort last year indicating that an all-new BS production would be airing and that the original series would eventually be coming to DVD in North America as well?

I seem to remember reading this and as such, it's my understanding that the episodes have already been restored. To what degree is anyone's guess, but I was sure this was slated for release here as well eventually.

Not exactly a new show, but they did make a new website with new footage. Not sure if it's still up. Wish they did put on it TV. At least it's cartoony unlike the new live-action stuff on the Network formally known as Cartoon.

That new Banana Splits stuff was airing in-between shows on Boomerang for a little while. Not sure if it still does or not.

We can only hope it may happen.

Is anyone else getting a little tired of Warner Home Video press releases just taking paragraphs verbatim from Wikipedia? They did this with the last "Superfriends" release as well. Is it that hard to write original copy??

Don't believe everything you read on the internet!

I received the DVD set Friday. These are the half-hour cutdowns as aired on Boomerang. The title on the package is "The Banana Splits And Friends Show -- Complete Season 1." 36 half-hours, six DVDs with six shows on each, no extras. However, they do have a feature where you can play just the Banana Splits parts of the shows without the cartoons and Danger Island. I would have preferred if they would have used that extra disc space to at least toss in the missing Banana Splits segments from the edited half-hours.

However, the picture and sound quality are very good to excellent.

You know, even if Warner Archive would just release the flawed 18 hours, I could at least cut together decent versions of the complete shows myself.

The artwork shows the characters from the recent shorts done for Boomerang -- which are not included here.

I'm still glad to have it, though. It's better than my old VHS tapes from TNT. At least there are no logo bugs.
