MF TOON,

Might I suggest you go to a scrapbooking store for some guidance? (I live in Mpls, MN, a store here I would recommend would be Archivers.)

There are many archival quality adhesives out there meaning they will not turn your papers yellow or have other nasty side effects. For the past several years I have used a tape called "Monoadhesive" by a company named Tombo for attaching photographs to paper. I have not had any ill effects when using this product. It is permanent in the application I use it for, but unsure of its ability to stick to tin.

Good luck!

I had to pick up my copy(from my mother who was unable to pick it up herself) of Mickey Mouse In B&W Volume 2, but sadly I can't watch it until Christmas Day, but I'm gadl to know that I have my copy.

I will tell ya guys that I bought MMIB&W Vol.2 over at Best Buy and the store almost sold out of the newest Mickey collection, as there was only two copies left when I got to the store and managed to pick up the copy.YES!

Hands down...Disney had the "BEST" dvd classic cartoon releases this year!

Slowly working my way through these... I'm trying to watch them in actual chronological order, which mans I went through all the way to Jungle Rhythm, then put in Disc Two to watch The Haunted House on the Vaults side (not that HH was really offensive... Mickey yells Mammy at one point when there's a blackout, which I suppose is why it's there).

I had never really seen any of these cartoons, so this is quite a treat. You can also tell that Disney is still trying to master the cartoon itself. In When the Cat's Away, the cat goes off to hunt, and the mice take over his house and abuse his things. If this cartoon had been made even a year later, the cat would have returned, and either the mice would have gotten their comeuppance or the cat would have been taken down. But no, the mice sing and dance for 6 minutes, then the cartoon just ends. It's a bit jarring.

Other interesting things I noted: The Opry House has Mickey playing the piano to Hungarian Rhapsody #2, and using many similar gags to the more 'classic' Rhapsody Rabbit and Cat Concerto. Talk about staying ahead of the curve...; Minnie softens rather rapidly, which is good, as I don't think the shallow, selfish person she was in the first shorts was fun to watch; the shorts are restored nicely, but sometimes there's only so much you can do. Jungle Rhythm looks every one of its 76 years.

All these 1929 cartoons are variations on 'let's sing and dance for 6 minutes', with the exception of The Barnyard Battle. Not surprisingly, I found TBB to be the best of this group, though I enjoyed all of them to some degree.

Leonard's From the Vaults intro is before the group rather than after each cartoon, which is good. There's an ethnic shot from The Mad Dog shown, which is odd as that short, along with Trader Mickey, is on the regular, kid-friendly side. Odd, that.

But one thing I noticed and am very sad to see isn't included; the photo galleries are silent, with no 'optional Leonard commentary' on certain frames the way we've seen in the past. I enjoyed his comments a great deal and was sorry to not see them here.

Still, so far I'm highly impressed with this collection, and it's great to see the uncut cartoons at long last.

Good idea, thanks!

I'll pass by over the weekend and see what they suggest.

It's kind of ridiculous that this even has to be done though...

Disney.

*sigh.

Default Missing the "Cigar Ring"

The only other "petty" gripe that I have is about the lack of the "cigar ring" that used to adorn the outside of the tins. NOW I not only have problems identifying the DVD tin when it is shelved, but the new ones now stand out fromm the older ones. I know this is petty, but hey..guess I'm spoiled

Keen observation, Sean. In fact, a lengthier and more satisfying ending WAS originally planned for WHEN THE CAT'S AWAY, but it was jettisoned in early 1929 as being too expensive to animate. I don't have the original synopsis with me here, but I remember it pretty clearly.
Notice that the parrot from STEAMBOAT WILLIE reappears as a pet in the cat's house? As I recall, the parrot gets increasingly worried by the mouse mayhem going on around him. He phones in a riot call to the police, and the whole force charges out of the station in horse-drawn wagons.
The cat returns from the hunt, enters his house and sees devastation. But Mickey and the mice have vanished into holes in the wall and floor. Cue the police, who entering the house see the wreckage, too, and assume the cat is the guilty party. They jump him all at once and the cartoon ends in a blaze of flying fur.
Sound good? Yeah, I'd rather have seen it that way, too.

I don't think you're being petty at all. Not being able to identify it on the shelf can be quite a pain. Disney's marring their prestige DVD line in an attempt to save half a cent by omitting the ring is petty.

Ah, this explains a lot. Thanks. To be honest, WtCA has some really interesting singing/dancing variations. The cheese player piano and the mice-powered record player are really very clever. I can see why Walt wouldn't want to jettison those scenes for dull plot and denoument.

Thanks for posting that, David. I wish they had used the parrot from Steamboat Willie in a proper plot thread, building up to that funny ending - I would have loved to have seen that. It's a shame this set doesn't have the story sketches for this cartoon like the first volume had for STEAMBOAT and MICKEY STEPS OUT (there's plenty of interesting stuff in the Disney vaults that'll make for great bonus material when the shorts are eventually due for release in another format).

So has anybody found any Easter eggs on this set yet? I'm really hoping the alternate versions of PIONEER DAYS and THE CASTAWAY are on it somewhere, although I actually kind of doubt it now (despite the official Disney site listing them as extras).
