Default "Popeye Volume 2" coming June 17

Not that this is a huge surprise, but I just got an e-mail from Warner Home Video officially announcing that "Popeye the Sailor Volume 2: 1938-1940" will be arriving on June 17!

The e-mail links to WHV's password-required press site, but here is at least the box art....

And for a taste of the extras....

Gee, only 2 discs and 31 shorts? Does anyone have any news about the supposed "Family" set?

Yep,
it was already announced on another forum that the set would have been a 2 disc one and I easily deducted it would have included only the 1938-1940 entries.
I know for sure that the releases (IF-?-) continue will do it chronologically so next set will have the WW" shorts, uncut.
Maybe the other b/w entries will be on another set released later this year, who knows?
I'm quite amazed about the fact that "Gulliver's Travel" will be a bonus!! Just hope it'd be a restored copy with original titles and all.
And I really hope that next set will include "Mr. Bug goes to Town" (a great animated feature IMHO) as a bonus, in his restored form.
Thanks for sharing, Greg!

WOWOWOW!!!

Bonus Features: Feature-Length Movie Gulliver's Travels

Looks great and will once again be my most anticipated release of the year!!

Unfortunately, I'm guessing WHV are going with double-sided discs this time to save costs. It's the only way I can imagine them ever possibly releasing 31 cartoons plus a feature-length movie with audio commentaries, documentary, radio and interview extras.

I hope Best Buy does the ltd. packaging promotion again this year too!

I'm surprised that the Gulliver's Travel movie included like a bonus. I watching it before on PBS during a movie marathon and i think it's a joy to watch them today. Thanks Greg!

I hope the set with the wartime shorts was deliver for Holidays!

But wait for the extras! That's look like a comeback of the pre-2005's 2-disc sets, you know the ones we have a featurette in the two sets. Because today the supplements was only in the Disc 2 and i find it disappointed.

I guess this set will only cover the shorts up until "Eugene The Jeep"... but unless my math is off, that doesn't equal 31 films. Didn't the first set finnish with either 1938's "I Yam Love Sick" or "Plumbing Is A Pipe"?

I wonder why WHV decided to alter the planned release of the final set this year by spluitting it up into one more volume? Perhaps they are doing more work with the transfers/restorations, or did the first set not meet expected sales?

The last set finished with Big Chief Ugh-Amugh-Ugh.

They're splitting them up to make the price better for collectors and mainstream buyers, as they fear low sales because the cartoons aren't in color.

According to various sources, Warner is prepared to do the same thing with Freakazoid as well..

I hope another set comes later this year. Waiting 24 months in order to get the equivalent of what should've been a 60 cartoon set would make the cut-ups on the Tom and Jerry DVD's seem trivial.

I still wish they would have atleast released all the Fleischer's, but the fact that Gulliver's Travels is an extra almost makes up for it. As long as it's properly restored and all that jazz. Hopefully Duck Dodgers is right and this means that Mr. Bug Goes to Town will be on the next set.

Still, if they think the fact that the shorts are in B&W is why it's not selling as much as they expected, then this is really dumb. Another 30 short two disc set won't even reach the Famous color shorts if I am not mistaken, meaning there would be a total of zero color shorts on Vol. 3. Regardless, more Popeye, a hopefully good release of Gulliver's Travels, I can't really complain much.

Actually, I think the chances of Mr. Bug being on the next set is slim to none since that one's not actually in the Public domain like Gulliver.
