Accoridng to Chuck's (drsd2kill) comparsion of the blue fairy, the new remaster seems to have moderately sharper detail than the 2003 version, but the 2008 version looks to be "flatter". That seems wrong somehow.
The pics of Aurora in the forest look all right, the colors of her clothes being different in each frame notwithstanding.

If you check out the link to the pics I posted at Home Theater Forum, you'll see the 2008 release more closely matches the 1987 release in color - LOL - I guess those other two restorations were anything but, or were they? Aside from the limitations of Laserdisc, the 1997 release is very good without the overcropping of the 2003 DVD. But this DVNR-like aspect really bothers me. It is no CINDERELLA, but it is there, and Disney has indicated that these masters will be used in the future for HD release. :-( Say it ain't so!

Just read what the woman who is in charge of these "restorations" has to say:
http://animated-views.com/2008/once-...s-restoration/ They remove the grain because it looks like "noise", but what about how they are removing subtle shadings, shadow, and ink lines?!?!?! And, yes, the seriously faulty CINDERELLA will be the same one released to Blu-Ray eventually, Cinderella's stepmother with the whites of her eyes still being blue. :-( |

That screenshot aside, I can see how the colors for the most part resemble the 1987 laserdisc.. Then again, since one of the cheif complaints about Peter Pan was that the colors were so much duller than the original laser release, what are the chances of this being intentional?

How come they didn't use the people who restored most of the content in the Walt Disney Treasures series? Are they in a different division?

Notice how much brighter this release is? All subtlety of shadow and mood - GONE. |

You pose your question to the wrong parties. You need to ask the Walt Disney Company.

Whoa, some of these pictures are mind-blowing. I remember watching this movie on VHS when I was a kid, so I'd never seen even the '03 version. Looking at the comparison shots here, The 2003 version just looks better than the new one. Take the image of Aurora on the cobblestones, or the one of her and the three fairies in the room. Notice the absense of the shadows or green tones in the new one. If you look at the images as 2 versions of the same painting, for example, they convey very different messages just with the subtle changes in color tone. I think the 2003 version looks the best.
