Robert McKimson animators
I was bored today. So I looked through all of the Robert McKimson entrys in Jerry Beck and Will Friedwald's book and found out who his animators were each year. The years are what year it was when the cartoons were released, not neccesiarily when the animators were there. It seems that McKimson's unit changed the most throughout all of WB history.
1946 (all from Tashlin's unit) Cal Dalton (joined the Davis unit in 1947) Don Williams (joined the Davis unit in 1947) Richard Bickenback Arthur Davis (became a director) 1947-1948 Manny Gould (from Clampett's unit, also works for Davis) I. Ellis (from Clampett's unit, left the studio in 1948) Charles McKimson (new to the studio) John Carey (new to the studio) Richard Bickenback (left in 1948) 1949 Manny Gould (left in 1950) Charles McKimson Phil DeLara (new to the studio) John Carey Pete Burness (new to the studio, worked for Freleng on "Wise Quackers") 1950-1951 Rod Scribner (recovers from Tuberculois) Charles McKimson Phil DeLara Emery Hawkins (from the Davis unit, left in 1952) J. C Melendez (from the Davis unit, left in 1951 for UPA) John Carey Manuel Perez (only on "Bushy Hare", joined Freleng's unit) 1952-1954 (all leave in 1955) Rod Scribner Charles McKimson Herman Cohen (worked for Davis before in 1947 and 1948) Phil DeLara 1955 Robert McKimson Keith Darling (new to the studio) 1956-1957 Ted Bonnickson (from Freleng's unit) George Grandpre (new to the studio) Russ Dyson (new to the studio, left in 1957) Keith Darling (new to the studio, left in 1957, but returns in 1961) 1958-1961 George Grandpre Ted Bonnickson Tom Ray (new to the studio, joined Jones' unit in 1961) Warren Batchelder (new to the studio) 1962-1964 Warren Batchelder George Grandpre (left the studio) Ted Bonnickson (left the studio) Keith Darling (left the studio) 1965-1966 (more people, but there was only one unit) Manny Perez Warren Batchelder Bob Matz La Verne Harding (used to work at Lantz studio) Norm McCabe Don Williams 1969 Ted Bonnickson La Verne Harding Jim Davis (not the creator of Garfield) Ed Soloman Norm McCabe I hope you like my 'research'. :p :speedy: |

Retroman~ Depends on how long of an answer you want...:p In brief though... Prime (and traceable) places after his being laid off by Warners, would include his employment at UPA (YES UPA! ) where he got to direct a couple of TV cartoons. Much of his later work was doing commericals (what a waste of talent:( ). In the Sixties he was still doing the commerical thing (health permitting), and working for Bill Melendez (think Peanuts). Much more obscurely, he was employed on "Fritz The Cat" (recommended by the great Irv Spence, former Warner work-mate), but only for one week before quitting. |
Rod Scribner also worked for Jay Ward's studio throughout the '60's. I'm not sure of the time frame, but I've seen his handiwork here and there from Rocky & Bullwinkle to George of the Junge.

Emery Hawkins' work actually wasn't exclusive to any particular director at Warners (though it showed up the most in Davis and McKimson's cartoons). His animation shows up in some of the Jones ("Eight Ball Bunny") and Freleng ("All Abir-r-r-rd") films of 1950 too.

Oh, and by the way... It's Pete Burness, not Phil Burness Phil De Lara was not entirely new to the studio also, his name appears on Jones' "Saddle Silly" from a few years before". If the credits are to be believed Manuel Perez also worked on "Dog Collared". You forgot to mention Bob Wickersham, who animated for McKimson after Emery Hawkins left but before Herman Cohen returned. Richard Thompson worked on one Foghorn cartoon with Phil De Lara and Keith Darling... I can't remember the title. It's probably worth mentioning that Keith Darling was also in and out of the Jones unit. |
