There's a cartoon I remember from my childhood which I'm almost 100% certain is a Looney Tunes or Merrie Melodies short. It deals with a dog waiting patiently for his master to come home, just sitting on the doorstep. IIRC, he waits for a REALLY long time. I can't recall much more than that, but I think the master finally comes home at the end.
Anyone know the name of it?

That was a running gag of "Unnatural History" (1959; Abe Levitow).

That was Abe Levitow"s "Unnatural History" (1959). It's a somewhat forgettable blackout gags film, though it does have a red nosed, Bugs Bunny look-alike in it.

Oh, that's right, it wasn't the full plot. Thanks, guys!
Sadly this one doesn't seem to be on AOL Video so I can't refresh my memory on it. So I forget, what was the final gag with this patient dog?

The master gets home, and the dog goes from sad-eyed, faithful old Shep to an angry wreck "Whaddya think you're doing, staying away like that? I could have starved! Where the heck where you, etc etc!!!" and kicks the master into the house.

There's a HUGE goof-up in this cartoon involving the dog running gag. The first time we see the scene with the waiting dog, he's sitting up with a smile on his face, but when we cut to a close-up of him, he's lying down all depressed. The first shot is actually a misplaced cell from the end of the cartoon, when the master finally arrives.

I've been waiting for someone to say, "No, that's McKimson's 'Dog Tales'!" Maybe I'm cracking up. So what is the running gag in 'Dog Tales'?

If I recall correctly, the running gag of McKimson's "Dog Tales" had a dog lost miles from his master and how the dog travels across the country to get back home again. The punchline: instead of reuniting with his master who has come out to greet the canine, the dog quickly runs to the trees in the backyard!

...That's mostly right but there's another p.s. after that; he's buried his bone under the tree and it's the BONE, not the master, that's he's returned home to. ;)
