Does anyone have a photo of Allen Swift that they could post here? (The only
ones that I have been able to find have been the ones of him in his "Captain
Allen Swift" makeup when he hosted a New York City kids' show.)
(The versatile Mr. Swift voiced characters on "Howdy Doody," "King Leonardo,"
and several Rankin/Bass TV specials.)

He also did voices for Gene Deitch, especially the Deitch produced TOM AND JERRY cartoons. Swift was the narrator/voice man for the early television releases of OUT OF THE INKWELL from The Bray Studios going back to 1949/1950.

And do you know what he showed on that kids show? The Fleischer Popeye cartoons! That was the first place I ever saw them. I can still remember my mother sitting me down and saying watch this, you'll like it. The first Popeye cartoon I ever saw was the one where Swee'pea goes into the factory (sorry, I'm terrible at remembering titles). She was right. I did like it.

I'm not sure if you've seen any narrated Dinky Doodles, but do you suppose he was doing those as well? I've seen one example in another collection and the voice seemed different...with a more "wiseguy" type of humor (and in this particular cartoon, pretty discriminative against Native Americans)...not sure if Swift was that kind of person- I don't know enough about him.

Don't forget you can hear him in the Casper cartoon, "Boo Moon" shouting "the Tree Men are attacking". I think Allen Swift is now 80 years old.

He also did the voice of Simon Bar-Sinister in "UnderDog. "Simon says, go snow!"

His voice is fairly distinctive, Tom, and should be easy to pick out. I think I first heard him on Underdog. He's the voice of Simon Bar Sinister. His talent was wasted mumbling "Dicky Moe" over and over again in the Gene Dietch Tom and Jerry cartoon of the same name.
He did commercial voiceovers during the same period.
I've never seen a picture of him.

That was LOST AND FOUNDRY. Once of the biggest laughs was POPEYE'S ad lib about "no child labor."

This won't help as far as a non-makeup picture of him:rolleyes: , but Allen Swift is the father of actor/comic Lewis J. Stadlen...
[I don't know if the two men look alike though.]

Allen Swift did several voices for Total TV cartoons (Odie Colognie, Itchy Brother, Tooter Turtle, Simon Bar Sinister, Riff Raff). Besides the Rankin/Bass TV specials, he can also be heard in the feature film "Mad Monster Party"
imitating Jimmy Stewart, Peter Lorre and Bela Lugosi. (In fact, he was so good
at impressions that, when Buffalo Bob Smith had the heart attack that caused
his long absence from THE HOWDY DOODY SHOW, Swift was the only other
person who could do Howdy's voice. Swift replaced Dayton Allen, supplying
the voices of (among others) Phineas T. Bluster and Captain Scuttlebutt.

All those Hostess characters! I wonder if Mr. Swift resembles any of these guys?
