I've seen threads posted here about books so I hope its okay I made this thread...
I see Popeye Vol 2 (http://www.amazon.com/Popeye-Vol-Well-Blow-Down/dp/1560978740/ref=pd_sim_b_4_img/103-7526001-5389468?ie=UTF8&qid=1189471497&sr=1-1) listed on Amazon, but there's no release date. Anyone know roughly when this is coming out? I can't wait to get it! I have instructions for a copy of the Richie Rich collection to be held for me at a local comic shop when it comes out, would like to reserve this one too. I believe Vol 1 came out somewhere near Christmas, maybe this one will too?

There is a date listed under "Publisher" that has its release as November 19, 2007. So it'll probably get released around then.
I read Vol. 1, and am real itching to see where Popeye and Castor's next adventure takes them.

I love the Fleischer and Famous Studios Popeye cartoons and even like many of the KFS made-for-TV films, but Segar's Popeye is the real deal. You haven't really seen Popeye until you've read Segar's Popeye. I encourage everyone to pick up copies of volumes 1 & 2.

(unearthing my old thread)
Is it true this book has been pushed all the way back to Dec 17? :( Dangit, I was hoping to use a Barnes and Noble coupon on it but it will be expired by then... :P
Why does all the cool stuff come out so close to Christmas? Most of it I want to buy for myself but I'm broke from buying gifts for other people! :D So not fair.

I can't wait for this!
Last year's hc was my favorite comic "reissue" in years! I think I breezed through the entire oversized book in a few days... I'm really excited for this upcoming volume! I don't mind the delay though, as I'm pretty broke right now.

I have a great intrest in comics too. But was Segar's Popeye newspaper strips?

Yes, Segars strip was in newspapers during the golden age of comics.
Segar created Popeye as a walk-on character for the his Thimble Theater strip.
Popeye took over the strip.
It's hard to put into words, but Popeye was quite different a character in the strips
- taking spinach for superhuman strength plot formula wasn't there.
The characters seem more like they were from a Dickens' novel.

I'm really enjoying it, except for Donald Phelps' introduction. Sample sentences: At other times, they seem to convey an all-but-inexpressible frustration, which propels a manic obdurateness: the frustration of laboring with the jagged, unpliable, pitiably raw fragments of the alphabet inherited from long, long, before. In these two kinds of primary events, the gaucherie and somnolent-seeming inanition of Segar's drawing rallies itself to a champing, ground-pawing momentum, and seems to take revenge for its long doze.

I'm really enjoying it, except for Donald Phelps' introduction.I started to read that. What a bunch of intelectual rubbish; "Hey look how clever I am!"
And we he's not done yet! Part 2 of his essay will be in the next volume.

I started snoring after the first paragraph...
Otherwise, I've had the book for a few days now and I'm already 3/4 of the way through! The early Segar Popeye strips are without a doubt the greatest comics ever inked and these books are addictive! Fanatagraphics deserves tons of praise for the quality they've shown with these!
