This is probaly one of the worst Columbia Fox & Crow cartoons, IMO. The story and writing are just very weak. However, the backgrounds are good and the ending is quite unique. Overall, I rate it a "miss". Give me Fox and Grapes or Room & Bored any day.

I say...average. There are worse Fox and Crow cartoons. In fact, there are far worse Columbia cartoons, in general. At least this cartoon looks good.
There's really only a handful of good Columbia cartoons -- The Fox and The Grapes, Flora, River Ribbing, Willoughby's Magic Hat, for example.

The incongrouously astonishing-for-their-date backgrounds just about save it.

I'm going to go with a hit. I particularly like the ending.

After watching this for the first time, it's really half and half for me, espicially the ending. But I give it a Hit 'cause of it's unusual storyline. :p

Someone posted a few Columbia Screen Gem Cartoons on YouTube, including this one. Best see it before they get deleted!

I found it on YouTube and another site as well. YouTube has a number of FOX AND CROW cartoons, including the first one, THE FOX AND THE GRAPES, which is the best. As many of you probably know, it was directed by Frank Tashlin, which explains the Warner's "feel." I had not seen this one since 1960. The others I had vague memories of, but enjoyed seeing. The problem with WAY DOWN YONDER IN THE CORN is that the story is too disjointed and the Crow's character is confused in motivation. It is interesting to see such advanced graphic background painting being used this early, possibly pre-dating the UPA influence. It is also intersting to note that WAY DOWN YONDER IN THE CORN was produced by Dave Fleischer. If I recall, Bob Wickersham was credited as director. While these cartoons have great animation, design, and soundtracks, their content is not always that exciting.
At least THE FOX AND THE GRAPES showed potential.
