For all you diehard Popeye fans (and I know there's a lot of you!). If you're within a good stone's throw of St. Louis, come check out the 28th annual Popeye Picnic in Elzie Segar's hometown, Chester, Ill (about an hour from St Louis, Mo) It's a great small town weekend with a fair, Picnic, Haunted Chester Tour, drawing with the experts and Official Popeye Fan Club dinner featuring a Popeye old time radio play!
Special guests come every year too (an' there's a rumor some very big guests will be there this year for some important things... that's all I can say- but they could always use more people in the Parade and Picnic crowd- it looks good on camera....)
On Friday and Saturday night, we show classic Popeye cartoons on the big screen in 16mm in front of the Chester Gazebo! Come see the Popeye museum and Popeye fanclub headquarters, located in Spinach Can Collectables, the small former opera house where a young Elzie Segar worked as a projectionist showing silent films! Mike and Debbie Brooks are always friendly and great hosts. And where else can you go to a parade where a bunch of people are dressed up as Popeye, and there's a statue of Popeye? I'll be picking up my year's supply of Popeye t-shirts, including some only available in Chester.
Oh, yeah.. there's a theme every year too. This years is 'Popeye Verses the Spacemen!" I can't wait to see what those floats look like....
