Ever since I got the recent Casper book and The Best of The Harveyville Times, I've became a bigger Harvey fan than I was before. Now I was wondering who's your favorite Harvey chartacter.
Note that this is not limited to the Famous Studios cartoon characters as Richie, Lotta, Little Dot and others did not appear in any of these cartoons.
Personally, I choose Casper. Yes I know that most of his cartoons were formulaic, but his comics helped mold him into a very strong character and stories also became more intresting with friends like Wendy, Spooky, Nightmare, and my 2nd favorite characters, the Ghostly Trio.

Why doesn't Sad Sack figure into this?

I like both Casper and Little Audrey, but I chose Casper as my favorite since I grew up with him.

I wasn't sure about putting him on the list, since he not 100 percent own by Harvey or Classic Media. But I would include him in other.

Lotta ranks as my favourite character. I have every one of her 120 comic books and many of her appearances in Little Dot and Richie Rich comics, and find her a very entertaining and clever creation.
On the minus-side: she's a poor role model for girls as she's obese, gluttonous, and also a bully. (This would be a right-wing PC viewpoint).
On the plus side: this is very funny comedy material. Not only does she get amazingly strong when she eats (a little like Popeye, but in her case it's constant), but she uses this to either help someone in peril or need, or pound the tar out of some brat who desperately needs discipline.
This redeems her- she doesn't meet the female standard of the child role model so she makes up for it by acts of aide or consideration, many times unknowingly surprising /shocking to near heart-attack or psychiatric counseling /walloping those standing nearby. She's also designed with ridicule in mind- wearing a party dress that barely covers her fat arse- as if her parents (of the 50's mindset, this makes it funnier) are thinking that as long as she looks like a model child, no matter what Lotta's size and demeanor really is, she'll be more like that ideal- making nonsense out of the notion that parents still try to pull off everyday, which is to control their kids to such a degree as to take away their own individuality and identity (think beauty-pageant moms or football-sargeant dads, for example).
But in essence she does make a lot of her own decisions and is able, active, and competent despite her size... still presenting a positive message.
Nice to see Hot Stuff on the list.... he's still a big name in Harvey characters, especially in Europe (and tattoo parlours). I always thought he'd have made some very funny cartoons had they used him.
