It looks like Best Buy will be the place to get the Popeye DVD next week. According to the DVD Talk forums (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?p=8024086), next week Best Buy will have the Popeye DVD set for $44.99 and it will come in a collector's tin exclusive to them. :sailor: :sailor:

eek!

where do you get that in Quebec?

[edit: I never realized there was a Best Buy in Mtl - 8871 boul. De L'Acadie!]

They are available to order on the BB web sites too, and clearly distinguished.

I'm curious what the packaging looks like and if it's just an added outer case that holds the regular box set within or if it's completely different. They'd have to do something similar with Vol. 2 as well!

I'm really suprised and delighted with all the promotion this release is receiving!

Very nice. I had already planned on getting this at Best Buy, but now the decison is final.

Thanks! Are they the only ones who will be doing some kind of "exclusive" thing though, I wonder..?

Thanks for the heads up, as I definitely have plans to pick Popeye up next week (and Woody Woodpecker this week).

Sadly, we don't have Best But in my city but however, if i got a chance, i could have with HMV and Future Shop. I hope...

The collector's tin really doesn't matter to me, as long as I get the set. Besides, the Best Buys around here are noticeably lax in carrying things. I have a hard time finding what I want at the one near my neighborhood and the others are too far away. It's either Wal-Mart or Target for me.....but I'll probably check Best Buy if those two don't have it.

I really don't care for the collector's tin, either (BTW, I wonder what it will look like?). As long as I get the set, I'll be happy! :D

I wonder if it'll be a spinach can?

And, yeah, "collector's tins" don't usually fit on my shelf as well as a plain ol' box.

I'm excited about this news because, there's a Best Buy about five minutes from my house and at $45, I can't see bothering with placing an on-line order.

The count-down continues...

A couple of questions, for anyone that can answer them.

1.Is Best Buy the only place for the collector's tin?
2.Will this be for a limited time only?

Thanks!:sailor: ;)

You can pre-order through the BB website for 59.99. They don't mention a collector's tin, though.

I thought $44.99 was a pretty darn good price (and the tin is a nice bonus). The only price lower was $43.71 over on DeepDiscount.

$45 is ok.

Haven't seen it confirmed by Bust Buy, however.

Would be happy to see a non-tin version for cheaper.

Did I mention I yam cheap?

$45 for the set (with the cool-sounding collector's tin) is indeed quite the deal! This set sounds so awesome, I wouldn't mind spending $45 for it. I hope it sells real well.

I saw some of the set with Jerry Beck and Bob Jaques tonight. "Ali Baba" and "Protek the Weakerist" looked amazing. I wish I could have stayed longer to watch "Sinbad". I can't wait to own the thing!

Aw, I didn't know there was a viewing! Was it public? All I knew of was the panel...

Well in any case my brother and I just got to show our favorite cartoon to my friends, including one friend from Australia who'd never even seen a Popeye cartoon before...Shocking!

Best Buy's website now lists the 44.99 sale price, but no mention of the tin yet.

Jon:

It's listed in the BEST BUY Sunday circular today. According to the ad, each store will only get a quantity of (6). I hope that I can hit the store in the morning to secure one...wonder how fast the collectors tins will go?

I had it in my hands, boys!!

I was this close to taking it home with me this afternoon!!!

I have to admit, the tin is definitely worth the trip to Best Buy. It looks fabulous, real classy and great artwork!

It's basically a silver metallic tin (appeared to be fairly sturdy build and not the cheap flexible kind) with an embossed graphic of the Popeye image from the box set on the fron, complete with the stars and everything and the 1933-1938 title. The embossed images look fabulous and way cooler than the regular box set. I assume that the packaging within is probably exactly the same. I'm guessing it's just a digipak which would likely be what the regular Popeye box set holds within.

Anyways, I did not leave completely empty handed...

I called beforehand, just for fun (as I was growing impatient for release day) and sneakily asked a customer service rep. in the home video dept. whether this set was available and made sure to clearly mention that I was going to drive down to pick it up. He assured me it was on hand and even offered to put it aside for me, but fearing that such an action would bring about the realization of his error, I thanked him and said that I'd just as easily grab a copy myself and that I was leaving right away. Of course, when I arrived there were obviously no copies on shelf. After some investigative work, it came about that the release date was Tuesday and when they apologized to me about the error, I complained that it was not good enough and I had specifically called beforehand to verify for this very reason and was told that it was available! I said that I had driven 40 mins. and wasted a quarter tank of gas. The sales clerk turned out to be really cool and grabbed a tin from the stock storage in the back of the store and tried everything to ring it up for me. But of course the computer system wouldn't allow it. He even tried to scan a Superman DVD and just alter the price, but than realized that it would screw up their stock inventory. So he went to ask the floor manager if he would be allowed to do this -- (I was so sure at this point that I was walking out of the store with it) -- but the manager came out to speak with me and explained how he could lose his job and it's illegal and a very serious issue to sell a product before release day. Sooo... he gave me a store card, signed it and initialed the UPC number and told me that if I came back on Tuesday, to compensate for their mistake... he'd offer a 75% discount! :D

WooooHooooooo!!!!

:sailor:

Just saved myself forty some bucks and the L.E. tin set is waiting safely for me to pick up Tuesday morning!!

The ad said there would be a minimum of six per store. Sounds like there should be no problem. (Of course there's a foot-note #3 next to this that indicates "no rainchecks?!?!?")

Let's see what happens come Tuesday.
