Hey. Im kinda new and I have a few questions on my favorite cartoon "Popeye"
These are the cartoons I have not seen on TV.
Your a sap mr jap-1942(Banned)
Scrap the japs-1943 (Banned)
Seein red white and blue-1943 (Banned)
A Jolly Good Furlough-1943 (Banned)
Pop-pie ala mode-1945 (Banned)
Fystic Mystic-1947
The Island Fling-1947 (Banned)
Popeyes Pappy-1952 (Banned)
Child Sockology-1953

Well how come The Fystic Mystic and Child Sockology are never shown on Boomerang? Are they banned and I just don't know it?

I'm not sure myself what might be wrong with "Child Sockology" ("remember, kids, never leave a baby on top of a skyscraper"?), but possibly, the problem with "The Fistic Mystic" at the current time may be that its story takes place in "Badgag."

"Swee'Pes" wonders onto a construction site and ends up on top of the skyscraper structure. It's not a good cartoon anyway, and the 1950s Swee' Pea design is not my favorite. As for "The Fistic Mystic," it was seen on television as recent as 15 years ago or so. But I would think that present day awarness of politically issues concerning the Middle East may have influenced its not being exposed at this time.

As for the other wartime cartoons, they are rather interesting and full of imagination and energy. I used to see them in the original TV package 50 years ago. For today's audiences, they are not relevent, but have gained added value for historical study, as they now stand as a type of documentary
of the sentiments of the time, as well as examples of how films and cartoons were used as propaganda pieces to support the war effort.

The upcoming Warner Brothers DVDs promise to release ALL the theatrical Popeyes uncut. So, you should be able to obtain copies of the ones you are missing fairly soon.

Scrap the Japs, Seein red, Jolly Good, Fystic, Child, were all shown on KSTW-11 here in the Seattle market in the late 1980s and early 90's. They ran the colorized ones though.

I have a 16mm print of You're A Sap, Mr. Jap and the print has muddy sound. I'll be glad to finally see a decent print when that other Popeye DVD comes out later.

Cartoon Network aired it uncut on Late Night Black & White, but the redrawn version used for other programs was edited.

No it was originally black and white, you mustve seen the redrawn version. If you don't know what redrawns are, i'll tell ye, before computers this was the only way to color a cartoon, Fred Ladd invented the concept, and in the late 1960s sent b/w cartoons to a studio in korea to be traced and refilmed in color, but most of the art was done sloppily, that's why many of us GACers (exculding me of course) don't like them.

Last time Late night black and white was shown on Boomerang they only showed some early 30s WB toons and a few MGMs, but they were constantly repeating the same cartoons. NO Popeyes or Betty Boops were shown which was a disapointment because the following Black and White Popeye cartoons were not part of the The Popeye Show and were only shown redrawn on Boomerang.
Be Kind to Animals-1935
Lets Get Movin-1936
Im in The Army now-1936
My Artistical Temperature-1937
My Pop, My Pop-1940
Problem Pappy-1941
Plus those wartime cartoons I wrote in the first post.
Some more notes:Im in the army Now-1936 is public domain so I have it in black and white. Plus Be Kind to Animals-1935 was shown a few years ago on TCM in between two movies called 1 reel wonders. All of these have been shown redrawn on Boomerang.

"Blunder Below" also wasn't included in "The Popeye Show", and Late Night Black & White only showed an edited version. (The redrawn version did air unedited on WTBS in the late 1980's, but WTBS even aired "Scrap the Japs" at least once.)
