View Full Version : Oh, how the animation DVD landscape has changed lately. What's next?

Yes, we can all look with proud amazement upon the DVD market battles we GACers (and the larger animation lovers' community as well) have won over the many months since this thread (http://forums.goldenagecartoons.com/showthread.php?t=1258&page=1&pp=10) first appeared, not least among those the stay of execution for the Walt Disney Treasures series.
And of course, we now have (most notably) the Droopy, Popeye, Woody, Thunderbean, Inkwell Images, and Stathescope ;) animation sets to savor and kvell over, with the WDT Oswald tin soon to follow.
But the "war" goes on. So, this multiple choice poll now asks: Now that all of the above are back in glorious existence on DVD, which of these other still nonexistent sets would you get behind with the same excitement if given the chance? Think hard about that, but have some fun with your answers! (I know you will, too.) :D

The Tex Avery Collection seems the most plausible, and it's very high up on my list of wants. With the Droopy DVD already booming, I think a full Tex set could be right around the corner, perhaps being released next year in honor of his 100th birthday. Just so long as there's no DVNR, of course...

"Famous Studios" trough the 40s got my vote.
Tex Avery is already on laserdisc and it will sure be released soon (2008 I guess).
Famous shorts deserve to be released restored and uncut.

It was a toss-up between Song of the South and The Censored Eleven, but I chose Song of the South.

Its a tie between Fox & Crow and the Censored 11. Both are long overdue.

I would like to see a Fox and Crow disc, but I think either the most logical picks for the next disc would be either Tex Avery or Betty Boop. Since Betty is so well-known, I thought why not her. Many people may be surprised to see that she's been around for almost 80 years.
As for a "Censored 11" set, I think those cartoons should just be mixed in on the Golden Collection sets. It would be less of an outcry than seeing it as a separate disc on the shelf.

I chose the Censored 11, since if that somehow came out on DVD one would have to be a fool not to snatch it up before it went out of print. However, just about all of the choices present are good ones.
Terrytoons... followed by Columbia.
Mostly because of their home-video scarcity.
I've got most of everything else listed on laserdisc or VHS.

You guys may know this already, but Amazon has The Inspector cartoons on pre-order under the title: The Pink Panther Classic Cartoon Collection, Vol. 6 - Inspector Cartoons. However, the release date is January 15, 2008... their code for a phony release date or something that has been cancelled or delayed with no new real street date.

Well, that's OK ... it'll just get The Inspector more votes here. :D

Tex Avery, Famous Studios 40's, Song of the South, and the Censored 11 would be the best choices.
I'd also prefer the collection of 60's Famous Studios.

The Compelte Betty Boop. I would run over cats, dogs, and old ladies galore on my way to Best Buy if such a set was ever released.

I went with 30's MGM. I would say Song of the South, but that whole issue has been so blown out of proportion now that it's ridiculous.
So, I figured I'd vote for some more stuff from the early days since it doesn't get as much recognition as it should.

Since "The Inspector" is already slated for release, "Song Of The South" is eventually coming and we can be certain that at least a couple of the "Censored 11" will find their way onto eventual releases as well (most of these are overrated anyways) and surely if the goal is to release all MM/LT... plus we've already been informed that based on sales of the recent Droopy set, a "Complete Tex Avery MGM Collection" would follow - So, I am going to go with the following:
1. Betty Boop
2. UPA theatricals
3. MGM (Happy Harmonies/Barney Bear, etc)
4. Gene Deitch Collection
5. Terrytoons
6. Columbia Pictures & Fox & Crow
I'm sure we'll see the Mighty Mouse cartoons shortly though...

Looking for Terrytoons and Columbia/Screen Gems cartoons? Have you tried a certain garage sale? (http://www.cartoonresearch.com/garagesale.html)
Oh yeah, been there... lotsa great titles for sure.
But I'm primarily interested in Tyer Terry... there are more Columbia titles than I previously remember, however – though I'd really like to gather up a complete Fox and Crow... and / or Lil Abner.
Thanx!

Actually, I have (for one other), and here's a gleeful shout-out to the proprietor thereof! :D But this poll is, after all, rooted in the realm of mainstream retail and bells-&-whistles boxed sets. (And what we really, really want ;) is extras like "The Hashimoto-San Story [with introduction by Leonard Maltin]"! Someday.)

"The Tom and Jerry Comedy Show: The Complete Series" *just kidding* :p
If I could release any animated DVD collections I wanted, I'd green-light "The Complete Animated Peanuts" (to go along with Fantagraphics' book series) , collecting all of the specials, TV series and feature films, remastered to get rid of the awful DVNR from Paramount's VHS releases. I'd also like to see if I could get extras from Lee Mendelson, Bill Melendez, UFS and Charles Schulz's estate. Maybe track down some rare items like TV interviews with Schulz, commercials, PSA's and the short dental hygene films that were done.

A long time ago, I thought it would be neat if there was a video release of the censored eleven, titled "The Uncensored Censored Eleven", and possibly featuring Bugs Bunny (since he's the only recognisable character who'd be in the set, though Egghead might be recognisable), Coal Black, and the Tin Pan Alley Cats on the cover. But then again, I have seen All This and Rabbit Stew, and it's kind of a weak cartoon. There are also other censored eleven cartons that I don't expect to be very good (Uncle Tom's Bungalo, Goldilocks and the Jivin' Bears, and Sunday Go to Meeting Time).

The Inspector was originally scheduled to be released on July 24. Perhaps MGM/UA delayed it so it wouldn't have to compete with Woody and Popeye?

Please forgive me Burt, my dear friend...lol:)
But I had to pick the Columbia cartoon library, simply becuase that studio has never gotten great exposure either on tv or home video and you would be surprised that newer modern day cartoon fans didn't even know that Columbia had their own animation dept.A few years ago, I posted on how Sony could package a dvd collection of their cartoon library, by making it a Mr.Magoo set along with the rest of the Columbia(Krazy Kat, Scrappy, Color Rhapsodies, Fox And Crow, etc, etc)animated series.I can only hope that maybe someday, Jerry can pursade Sony to release these neglected cartoons to a new generation.
BTW:My second choice would be for the Terrytoons to see the light of day on home video, but we all know how Viacom is..

If Republic ever decides to do a DVD set of their stash of Paramount cartoons, I would like to see them mix up the Fleischer and Famous Cartoons, because that would give them set a bigger roster of recurring characters (Betty Boop, Casper, Gabby, Little Lulu, Raggedy Ann), and while the Popeye set doing well might make a Republic DVD of Fleischer cartoons more of a possibility, the "NTA Red" Famous cartoons don't have anything like that and such a mix-up would be the only shot they would ever have at being on a DVD set.
Others:
Tex Avery Set (that's goes without saying)
The Alvin Show (Hopefully we'll get this as a tie in to that Sure-to-be-crapola CGI movie that's forthcoming)
A Complete, Uncut, Unabrdiged DVD set of all 115 Tom and Jerry shorts
A Terrytoons Set (If only to see pristine examples of Jim Tyer)

The non-Droopy Tex Avery...the Warner stuff will surely be covered in the Golden Collections (but they need to hurry up!) but Avery did so many great MGM cartoons...they need to release those!
Also, Columbia cartoons. Woefully neglected stuff...Fox and Crow are brilliant! I think the UPA stuff falls under the same banner...that stuff needs to be given the proper treatment.
As for more modern stuff, Tiny Toons. What's taking THAT so long?!

I would love to see better restored versions of Betty Boop cartoons (I myself would love to find some great quality copies of all those redrawns but thats never going to happen) I wonder what we could do with the lost kitty cartoon, special features could be a possibility. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE A COLUMBIA AND TERRYTOONS DVD! I'm sick of these cartoons being lost in obscurity.

Since Criterion has licensed film properties from Paramount in the past (most recently with "Ace In The Hole") and considering they've showed zero interest or initiative in putting this stuff out themselves... I wonder what the possibility of a Criterion release would be?

Tex Avery and Betty Boop (with the rest of the Talkartoons as a bonus feature) are on the top of my list.
I WHV to do Tom & Jerry right ASAP.
I'd like to see Woody & Friends continue to another volume.
I do want to get my hands on more Jim Tyer Terrytoons.
As I understand it the color Columbia cartoons are restored, so it wouldn't cost them too much to put 'em out.

Tex Avery easily gets my vote. After all, they already released a laserdisc collection that had every MGM Tex Avery short in one fell swoop (The Compleat Tex Avery) in the early 1990's; why not give him the same treatment with DVD?
Having every MGM short from this brilliant and prolific director in one package would just totally kill.

Here's what i fear the most if Warner Bros. does do a DVD of this
1. Put a big price tag on it (Explanation #1 of why Huck Hound Vol. 1 didn't sell well)
2. Lack of advertising (Explanation #2 of why Huck Hound Vol. 1 didn't sell well)
3. Subliminally lace in DVNR

A lot of great suggestions and choices here, and I'd buy every single one of them (even the Tom & Jerry Comedy Hour someone joked about).
One that I'd love to see is a complete set of the non-Spider-Man Marvel Super Heroes cartoons from the 1960s.
Heck, for that matter, I'd love to see sets for the 70s and 80s Marvel and DC shows as well (the Fantastic Four with HERBIE, the Spider-Man and Hulk shows from the early '80s, Spider-Woman, Plastic Man....)
