View Full Version : Amazon.com woes!

Well, I ordered the Woody and Popeye sets today from Amazon, and I opted to go with the "Super Saver" (free) shipping. I can understand receiving the sets a few days late, but why can't they ship them on the release date? They say Woody will ship July 30, and Popeye will ship August 6, 2007! Why so long?? I'll be on vacation for part of that time, but I was counting on having the Woody set by then.

Gosh, thanks so much for that advice! :p My question remains, why can't they ship them, even if it IS "Super Saver," on the SAME DAY they're released?

Yes, the "quoted" shipping dates amazon.com gives usually aren't accurate. I think the most recent Disney Treasures arrived before the release date, even with Super Saver shipping. (But More Silly Symphonies had multiple dents in the tin, though I was able to return it.)

Barb,

I also pre-ordered Woody from Amazon a few weeks back (also with the free shipping :scrooge: ) my "shipping estimate" is July 29, 2007. :p

I hope it ships sooner than that.

I too pre-ordered the Woody Woodpecker DVD along with Brain Age 2 at Amazon.com

They are comin' to my house sometime in August

The best way is NOT to panic but, be very patient
by doing the following: Play a DS/PSP game or two, Watch some TV and Occupy yourself with YouTube (not to mention Watchin' the Toon DVDs y'all already have)

I've been through this before. A few months back, I preordered Pokémon Diamond and a Nintendo DS Lite through Amazon, expecting them to ship on April 22 (the game's release date). They said it'd ship somewhere around April 30. Then a few days before April 30, I got an e-mail saying that the shipment had been delayed until May 14. I said "screw it", cancelled my order, and went and bought both game and system at my local Wal-Mart. Not only did it cost a little less, but I had the satisfaction of actually owning the items the very moment I purchased them.

Hence why I don't use Amazon anymore, unless the product I want is unavailable in my area. If Wal-Mart or FYE have the Woody and Popeye sets when they hit the streets, I'm buying 'em right then and there.

My shipping date for Woody is July 24, but I paid for shipping. However as I live in Australia, I will still receive it after most of you guys. I don't mind waiting, as long as I get the DVDs. Unfortunately living in Australia means that I have to rely on Amazon, as for me to be able to get to my nearest Walmart means that I'd have to catch a plane to Hawaii or something.

Popeye will be shipping for me on July 31st.

Barb, it comes down to simple economics and the timing of the Woody release. First of all, Amazon.com will ship the orders that paid for postage first. After those orders are filled, then the Super Saver (free) Shipping customers' orders are filled. This is their policy.

Second, vintage animation is not high on Amazon's priority list. There are several other bigger name releases going on at the same time as Woody. The DVD releases that are top sellers on that release date for Amazon.com are "Stargate - Season 10" (currently at #6 for sales) and the film "Zodiac" (#81 in sales; Woody is around #800). The bigger the preorder list, the more attention it gets from those guys. Woody probably won't ship until after its release date because the other best sellers get more priority.

Third, and probably the main reason, is that Woody is being released the Tuesday after the last "Harry Potter" book is being released. Amazon.com is already putting full attention into shipping its million preorders of the book and will continue to be busy dealing with Pottermania after its July 21st release date. Unfortunately, Woody's sales cannot compare to the numbers for Harry Potter.

I totally agree with you that any preorder should be given priority at Amazon.com. However, their policies are different. I got frustrated when the Huckleberry Hound box set came out. I had preordered it three months before its release, but there was no way I was going to receive it until a week after its release date. I cancelled the order and bought it at Best Buy instead.

I hope some of this helps.

Or you can order from DeepDiscount.com. Their price is better than Amazon on both sets and they also have free shipping. Their ship times tend to be a few days longer, but they also tend to ship on time. My order says it should ship for me to receive it by July 24 on Woody. I don't think I will... but it will be soon after that. I'll let you know when I get it.

I got the Droopy set through Deep Discount DVD, and they messed up my order, so I'm a little reluctant to use them again. I'm going to pay for standard shipping through Amazon for the Woody set, and that way I'll have it before I leave on vacation (even with the shipping charge, it still ends up being cheaper than Wal Mart's price of 33.00). I guess I'll stick with the free shipping for the Popeye set, and hope it will be waiting for me when I get back.

What's Wal-Mart's price for the Popeye set? I haven't pre-ordered either set from amazon.com because I have unused Wal-Mart gift cards from this year's birthday and Christmas 2005, but if Wal-Mart's price isn't much lower than the retail price (which turned out to be the case with Season 2 of Desperate Housewives last year), I'll stick with amazon.com.

I've been ordering from Amazon lots and lots of DVDs since 1999. In my experience, most orders with Free Shipping ship the Monday or sometimes even Sunday of the relesase Tuesday, and usually arrive on the Tuesday or Wednesday.

A lot depends on where you live. I'm in south Florida and wherever Amazon ships from it usually takes at least a week to arrive here. If you are close to their shipping area it can take less time. Same as shipping by UPS - if you are in NYC you can get a package pretty fast since it is a hub city. Anything I get sent by UPS first has to go to their Florida hub in Jacksonville and then travel about 400 miles down state by truck which takes at least an extra couple of days (then it goes to their subcenter in Ft. Lauderdale and takes an extra day to come up here), which is why if I have the option I never choose UPS.

Not DVD related, but DeepDiscount.com does ship fast -- sometimes too fast (http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=OTYxYmE5Y2UzNDMyNWQ2YzFmYTk3NzY1MTkxZGFhNzI=).

I got an e-mail this morning from Deep Discount saying my Woody Woodpecker set has shipped. I'm sure I won't receive it tomorrow, but then I'll be at the Comic-Con the rest of the week, so I won't know what day it actually comes. Anyway, I'm sure it will be waiting for me on my return.

I got my e-mail from Amazon saying my Woody set has shipped... of course, I did give in and upgraded the shipping. I should have it by the 26th. :woody:

I was at Wal-Mart this morning and didn't see any shelf space set aside for Woody (they did have shelf space for the "Ultimate Underdog" DVDs, though).

Just wanted to update that Woody was waiting for me when I got home from Comic-Con, so I can't say exactly what day it arrived. I also had an e-mail waiting that Popeye has shipped. I'm sorry Barb had trouble with Deep Discount. I like them.

I usually compare prices with Amazon and whoever's cheaper, that's where I order it.

Boxes. At least they did when I bought several DVDs from them.

The only problem I had with DeepDiscount is that they didn't have one of the DVDs I ordered, but they didn't tell me they were out of stock, either. So I waited for weeks expecting to receive this disc in the mail, until I contacted them about it and found out that it never shipped.

Do they use any kind of packing material or do the DVD sets just slide around loose inside the shipping carton? (I'm very picky about the condition of the DVD boxes/slipcases; I'm sure everyone in amazon.com's and amazon.co.uk's customer service departments wishes I would drop dead because of the amount of damaged items I've returned for replacement.)

I got my Popeye set today... right on time and way earlier than I thought I would get it.

They sometimes use scrunched up paper to fill the void in a box, but the Popeye set came in a box that fit it perfectly. It was in mint condition. No bumps or bruises.

(I'm very picky about the condition of the DVD boxes/slipcases; I'm sure everyone in amazon.com's and amazon.co.uk's customer service departments wishes I would drop dead because of the amount of damaged items I've returned for replacement.)As Daws Butler Jr. said, they usually use crumpled up paper or a box that fits perfectly. I don't believe I've ever had a problem with DeepDiscount as far as damaged cases go, and I've ordered literally hundreds of DVDs from them over the years. Sometimes though the discs will come loose inside the package and end up scratched. But that's not the retailer's fault, it's probably the fault of the manufacturer or the shipper (but DeepDiscount is the one that ends up having to deal with it). I've had just as much of a problem in this regard at Amazon and even brick & mortar stores.
