I like them all, but I decided to go with HENPECKED HOBOES. There are some great gags in that cartoon (e.g. "Okay Junior, bend over!"). HALF-PINT PYGMY had some great gags in it, but I didn't care too much for the re-design of the characters. They look more Avery-esque in the first three cartoons.

"Half-Pint Pygmy" easily gets my vote. Avery includes a joke or a gag in seemingly every scene in this short, an admirable feat to say the least. The other three G&J shorts are also quite good but are a bit too slow-paced for my tastes. "Half-Pint Pygmy", by contrast, speeds things up quite a few notches to a much more frantic and rapid-fire coming-right-at-ya experience!!!!!

This was a tough choice. I dislike the misogynistic business in HENPECKED HOBOES, and the egregrious racist material in HALF-PINT PYGMY, but they're both brilliant cartoons with some radical, innovative stuff in them.
My choice for overall best G&J short is HOUND HUNTERS. The characters are so well-developed in this cartoon. They seem to have a life of their own. The gag about Junior running around a city block, out of fright, is hilarious.
This cartoon is also one of Avery's few efforts with a genuinely heart-warming ending. It seems sincere, and it works really well.
George and Junior were great characters, and I wish Avery had stuck with them. They have many endearing, offbeat qualities. Their interactions in RED-HOT RANGERS are priceless.
I re-watched HALF-PINT PYGMY last night. That has to be one of THE most beautiful Hollywood cartoons of them all. The character designs, lush animation, atmospheric backgrounds, and poses are gorgeous. As another poster mentioned earlier, this cartoon is also unique in the high volume and intensity of its gags. Avery crams every moment with gags galore. Even when they're corny, or don't work, their sheer volume has a strong effect on an audience.
George and Junior are top-drawer Avery, and proof that he could create appealing, if offbeat, characters during his MGM period.
