Does this short strike anyone as a bit..odd? It's not *bad* per se, although certainly not one of the better Popeyes (at least IMHO). However, the cartoon seems rather different than other entries in the series:

-The total absence of any other Popeye characters outside the sailor himself-not Olive, no Wimpy, and no Bluto.

-The unneccisary "framing device" with the orphans at the start and finish of the 'toon

-The barrage of Tex Avery-seque gags during the boxing match, with Popeye and his opponent acting out the various boxing terms.

I figure someone at the studio wanted to break away from the usual "Popeye eats spinach, beats up Bluto, and saves Olive" formula, but I'm not sure how well it worked out. Other thoughts?

There were actually a few Popeye's without any of the other characters.

Some include:

INSECT TO INJURY
WOOD PECKIN'
POPEYE: ACE OF SPACE
YOU'RE A SAP MR. JAP
SPINACH FER BRITAIN
THE MIGHTY NAVY

Add to that list....

Shuteye Popeye
Flies Ain't Human
The Fly's Last Flight
Popeye Meets William Tell

I wonder if the writers decided to make a boxing cartoon and tacked the orphan thing on, or decided to make one with little kids feeding Popeye spinach through a TV and tacked the boxing on...

Definately not one of my favorite Popeyes, but I can certainly think of worse ones. ;)

You have to give "Punch and Judo" some credit. It's one of the few Popeyes of the period that's it's not a clip show nor a remake.

"Punch and Judo" is almost a remake of the 1934 Fleischer Popeye, "Strong To The Finich".

Not really "Strong to the Finich" was about popeye bringing spinach to some orphans, that didn't like spinach. They were watched by olive oyl. There was nothing about boxing in it though they both had orphans.

How Green is My Spinach-1950 seemed similar and Avery-esque as did Punch and Judo.
