There is a show on History International every week called Year by Year and each week they show film reels from a certain year. I record the show every week because I find it interesting. Anyway, they had the year 1942 on a few weeks ago and I watched it for the first time today and in the middle of the episode the entire SNAFU short Gripes was on. The film reels shown are in public domain, they show only Universal Newsreels. I am just wondering how they were able to show SNAFU, is he in public domain as well? Also, I was suprised the quality on them, seemed better than some of them on the golden collections.

The SNAFU cartoons are in the public domain (or most of them anyway).

THE PRIVATE SNAFU cartoons were done for the Armed Forces. Any films such as these done for government agencies are Public Domain films.

However, even if PD, "Secrets of the Caribbean" is one of the rarest cartoons ever.:(

Ok, that is what I thought.

Just in case anyone was wondering 1943 showed the short Rumors, but 1944 didn't show one.

I have 1929-1944 and 1963-1967 and 1942 and 1943 are the only two years to show shorts on them. I will keep an eye out to see if they show one for 1945 next week.

And I think that some Private Snafu cartoons were produced by other studios besides Warner Brothers. It sort of makes me wonder if Warners owns the character rights to Private Snafu (and Hook).

Harman and Ising and Lantz also contributed to the series, but the majority were done by the Warner crew. I'm pretty sure all of them are public domain, and the characters too.

Yesterday there was no Snafu short so I guess it was just a two time thing.
