Well, the opining animation was ugly, but it's great that they're showing a clip of "The Screwdriver". And that's just the tittle page!

Well, they're using the original "Anti-Christ" Woody, so were you expecting it to maybe look like a Harman-Ising cartoon?
Since half the posts about the Woody Set at the Animation Show are of a delusional crackpot trying to drum up hysteria and conspiracies theories over the usual crap, it's nice to see something positive about it for a change. The restored clip from the Screwdriver looks fantastic and I'm sure it'll definitely blow the edited TV print included on one of the Columbia House DVD's clear out of the water.
Since my entire career isn't based around stirring up trouble and creating mass paranoia like a total blowhard, I'm not even going to buy this set the day it comes out. I'm preordering the thing so it comes directly to my house the day it comes out (and maybe even a little earlier)

No, I ment the opening flash animation was ugly. It was like the DVD menus for LTGC Vol. 2.

The contents have just filled me with awe, and I probably haven't seen half of the cartoons included.
This is it, the dream set of us all. The one we've all been waiting for. No amount of fear and panic will prevent a preorder from me.

Heh, I'm only surprised a FAR DECENT copy of "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B" will be on this collection as well, I have that from a crappy Castle Films B&W transferred copy that was included as a bonus on a tape of Amos & Andy TV episodes.

Personally I would have preferred to see clips from "Abou", "Greatest Man", and "Mirandy", but considering the site is aimed at the general public they have no interest to show previews of the real goodies for us collectors.
Have you read the intro, the first thing you read after clicking the link?
It mentions how the DVD contains "Woody plays Santa" (actually the Castle Film reissue title of "Ski for Two"); "Pantry Panic" (oh, amazing! No one has ever seen this!) and "The Wee Men" (WT*? A Famous Noveltoon???).
What care, what attention, what love........a site for us collectors!

It sounds like somebody accidently copy-and-pasted the description of the old "Kid Klassics" public domain Woody VHS from the 1980s (which featured those exact three cartoons...) :p

Don't get me wrong - this is a great set, but I'm a little annoyed that there isn't at least one disc that has just Woody Woodpecker. I would have preferred the last disc to have all the "various" cartoons, and had the first two discs exclusively Woody cartoons.
You see, I'm not a big fan of the non-Woody cartoons.

Wow , on that site it shows disc art on all 3 discs , meaning they will not be on those problematic double sided discs.Thank goodness !!!!!!!!!!!:)

Don't forget, in addition to the DVNR or Not DVNR arguments on the other forums, and the lamenting here about the inclusion of non-Woody cartoons, to bring up the following:
1) The lack of Fair Today on the collection.
2) The lack of audio commentaries, particularly because if there WERE audio commentaries, they might be by John K., which would lead to even MORE discussion!
3) The box art, which might drive away the hardcore cartoon fan with its clip art, modern look. "Never mind the restored, uncut cartoons, I will NEVER buy a collection with that Wally Walrus on the cover!"
Only then can you be considered a hardcore cartoon fan, ready to lament about the state of the industry these days at the drop of a hat. :woody:

Interesting points. I'm glad I'm not the only one who was largely unimpressed by the artwork of Wally Walrus on the DVD cover art; he looks almost evil or demonic or something!!! Maybe Woody drove him over the edge one time too many! :D :p
The lack of inclusion of "Fair Today" was another sore spot I had with the DVD content. I'm very glad "Hysterical High Spots..." is at least being included, a Lantz 1940's classic I've NEVER seen in my life, but "Fair Today"... man, that one's hard to get a hold of! Does anyone even have this one??? It looks hilarious!!!
And, of course, the complete absence of audio commentaries was rather disappointing although if the next set were to have audio commentaries, I would prefer NOT to have any by John K. (sorry, John K. fans!). Jerry Beck and Mark Kausler would be my picks for audio commentators.

As funny as it can sounds, Wally does indeed a lot of facial expressions like that one in "Wacky Bye Baby".

About commentaries,
I would have loved Jerry, Mark, not John K because he does not know anything about Lantz cartoon........but I would have also wanted our Larry:cool: to provide commentaries for Lantz shorts;)

The box art, which might drive away the hardcore cartoon fan with its clip art, modern look.It won't. They know the hardcore fan is going to buy regardless, so they don't need to target him/her with the box art. They do need to attract a wider audience to make a profit, so they aim the cover art at the lowest common denominator, which is fine with me as long as the cartoons are treated well (restored, no DVNR, no excessive compression, etc.) Anyone who would avoid buying the set because of the box art isn't really a hardcore fan.

We've got less than a month until it's released. I'm really looking forward to this set. It'll be nice seeing these cartoons in better quality and timecode free.
The website really cheered me up and was a genuine nice surprise. The sounds, clips and info have got me even more excited for this DVD than I already was and I thought the flash animation was fun (though I admit it's a little ugly). I didn't see the weird info about "Woody Plays Santa", "Pantry Panic" etc. Maybe it was contained in the bit of copy which flashed up when I fist clicked on the site (the animation started too quick for me to read it). I did, however, find the information about what is contained on each disc which should certainly please us collectors!

As long as we get these cartoons in good quality, I will have no complaints.
I'm not going to nitpick about the choice of cartoons.
Hopefully the set will sell well enough and another will be done and some of the cartoons missed will show up there.

I thought so too, I had that tape!
Oddly, a copy of "The Wee Men" that was on it had much of it's opening cut out after the credits (mostly an intro to the Leprechauns and the song they sanged, used also for the Screen Song openings), but the fourth cartoon that showed up afterwards was "Leprechaun's Gold".

"Fair Today"... man, that one's hard to get a hold of! Does anyone even have this one??? It looks hilarious!!!
I have it, and it's pretty funny, yes. But I'm much more happy to see "Mother Goose On The Loose" appear here.... it's far superior in terms of humour... altough "Fair Today" does have some great adult jokes in it.
And, of course, the complete absence of audio commentaries was rather disappointing although if the next set were to have audio commentaries, I would prefer NOT to have any by John K. (sorry, John K. fans!). Jerry Beck and Mark Kausler would be my picks for audio commentators.
You forgot me in that list :) - if there's ANY studio I'd have killed to be able to do commentaries for on their cartoons, it would have been the Universals.... I'd have had a lot to say about the artists in their units, especially the early 40s to the mid 50s (most of the Woodys included here).
Oh well.... maybe someone will be absent for the next LTGC and I can jump in as a substitute ;) Hey, Porky got to do it at the Crocadero once..... :ham:
