Here's one I don't think any of us have EVER seen (or even heard of...):p .
(Calling Steve Stanchfield:D )

Smellot Bones, The Dog Detective
(Racket Cartoons)
(C) Jan. 10, 1930 Alexander Cruickshank & Rudolph L. Eggeman

Eggeman had been an early animator, working for Pat Sullivan on the ancient "Sammie Johnsin" series. And then he turned up working at Fleischer in the sound era on some fine Betty Boops.

You know, even with my infamous punning, I just COULDN'T make THAT title up!!:D

Sog,
why you don't start to show us photos or images of your collections? Can't believe you can afford such a titanic collection of drawings, storyboards, cels and such and can't afford a digital camera or a scanner;)

Not that I presume to speak for ol' Sog or anyone else on this point, but I personally have had a less-than-successful track record on getting my scanner to produce images that can be properly presented here. So it ain't necessarily always affordability that stops GAC imaging cold. :tweety:

HE could send ME the images and then I'll fix everything:D ....I could post them on my blog or he could make his own blog...at least we could see, for one time, what the h-ll he talks about:D

Hmmmm... I didn't mean to infer in any way that I have this particular lost cartoon. I just re-found it while doing some research.

And I can't afford a digital camera or scanner;) BECAUSE I spend nearly all my money on my research (and that is NO exaggeration)...

[Full disclosure though:D , I have bought another scanner for this computer but I'm now hesitant to hook it up since the USB system on this computato never worked right before. On my "to do list":p ].

But wouldn't be better to share with others at least images?
What is the joy to collect and hold everything for yourself, making people not even able to see pictures of what you got?
IMHO, if you got something, but no one can't see it, is like that thing is non-existant.

Not trying to sway you. All I mean is that it would be "nice" to see proofs of what you have. Us animation fans would only be delighted to see your collection.....;) .
When you told me in the past that hardly your contribute to the animation community is appreciated and known, well, the fact that your collection is far from the eyes of other people is a great reason.....;) ...believe me, a blog or at least images would help.
Then do as you wish. I'm merely giving a suggestion. An interested one, because I'd love to see them images....:D

Like I said before, it's always been MY INTENT to get a scanner up and runnin' again and post some things (heck maybe I'll get it going by the time I get the cels from Sutherland's "The Most Important Person":p , I KNOW EVERYONE would be DYING to see those:D .

Are you gonna publish the ultimate animation history book?

Or are you going to be like poor Richard Williams and his ultimate animated film?:D

Good ol' Smellot Bones!

Yeah.. I've been looking for this one FOREVER, if it even exsists. Those Cultoons dvd really are some of the rarest things there are. I also wonder if the Dr. Suess cartoons from 1930 will ever turn up.....

My favorite rarest of the rare things I've love to find are these and:

Benny the Bear in 'A Cowboy I would Be'

The Egyptian cartoon based on Van Beuren's Tom and Jerry called "Enjoy Your Food"

ANY propaganda short from Germany or Italy (ok, ok.. who has a print out there of 'Doctor Churchkill'??!?!?!?!)

The rest of those Kinex Studios films (we're up to 20 of the 27....)

Hugh Harman's 'Gonorrhea' (no.. he didn't have it- it's a 20 minute film made for the US!)

Those Daffy Ditties that Tashlin did!

Those Romer Gray Drawings (so I can shoot 'em in 35mm)

The other lost films from Audio Cinema

(back in 1995 I directed a short policy trailer in a 1930's sort of style- the title reads 'Racket Sound cartoons'. So, the Sequel to Smellot Bones is at least intact!)

I personally have always been amazed by how many unknown and mysterious films were produced during the 30s and 40s. Tats Tales, Boyd La Vero, Rodney Gilliam Co. are some of the bizzaire names that I have been running into in my cartoon research (found those names under the cartoon producers lists in the Film Daily Yearbooks), and I have always been curious about the films they were making.

PS-Special thanks to Steve Stanch and other collectors out there who make these rare mysterious obscurities available on DVD:) (Keep up the Good Work!!!)

Masked Stinker~

Define "soon":p.
[And nooooo it's much more on the lines of Mike Barrier's three plus decades of research, annnnd since my grandparents lived to be almost ninety... "soon" is relative;). Though who knows, I could croak:flip: tomorrow... Lastly, my 'baby' can't go the way of Richard Williams idiosyncratic film opus, which he lost because of getting outside financing and then being foreclosed on].

Steve Stanchfield and all~

My list of the MOST IMPORTANT lost cartoons to locate...
(in order of importance, with the first two being by far most important)

1). The two 1931 Dr. Seuss Warner cartoons (anybody I need to kill to get these?!?:daffy: :D )
2). The Skippy animated cartoons (he was a major comics star), they MIGHT exist overseas, somewhere. (Yes the peanut butter was named for him).

3). All three Tashlin Daffy Ditties (for Sutherland)
4). The "Tat's Tales" (Tashlin was an animator there, reels of film WERE completed, and work was on a FEATURE! )
5). Harman's "Gonorrhea" (no matter how you phrase that it comes out bad:p ).
7). Tex Avery's missile film (made for Alexander of Colorado).
6). The Snafu by HB. It'll never turn up (because it never got to camera).
7). The unfilmed final Iwerks ComiColor... (never got to camera either)
8). Those two darned Romer Grey Studio films (speaking of which...;) http://www.luresetc.com/Boat%20Sale%20ltr.jpg

No need to feel bad.
I'll try to explain the concept again.
What I meant is that you told me, trough PMs, that few people really know how much of your life you devoted to "cartoon research". I think that the fact that you are keeping your collection all for yourself is the main reason. If no one has ever seen at least images from your collection of drawings/storyboards and assorted treasures then it's evident that the majority of people can't know about your role in the preservation and research of classic animation.
Hope to have been clear now.

Skippy? Who's this fellow and what studio did he come from?

Also Pretty interesting find on the Romer Grey Studio. Somewhere I have a photocopy of an advertisement for his cartoon studio from the Film Daily Yearbook.

Hi Tim,

You should really think about getting your collection scanned, especially for conservation and preservation reasons. You know, one bad incident and you could lose your lifetime's work. Don't think this hasn't happened to others. Even when you might think it's safe, well...that's why it's called "accident." Even hardcopy backup is not necessarilly safe enough. So think about cd or dvd burns, whatever. Perfectly good scanners are really cheap and the same for an inexpensive or used digital camera.

Whether or not you decide to put scans online either here or on your own blog is your decision, of course, but if it is for technical reasons I would help you. I've put a slew of website over the years, professionally or as a favor. You'd be a favor. Whether just walking you through the motions of correctly setting up a scanner or something more technical. As you know I've periodically put a lot of my stuff up here over the past couple of years, so I hope that would give me some cred re honesty, etc. We'd all love to see some stuff, you pick and choose. Maybe it will even jumpstart you to bring it all together and get that book out(?)

What Paul said.

At least get a digital camera and document your collection visually, if only for insurance purposes.

I collected vintage animation art for a while, and the effort doesn't cost much at all... insurance for art collections is (was?) dirt cheap, and even includes earthquake coverage here in CA.

You can estimate the worth of your own collection (who else would know better?), document it, and have an authority entity (auction house, S/R Labs, or a big gallery) sign off on it for free or cheap... then you have authenticated appraisal and peace of mind.

Disclaimer: I did this some 10 years ago, so rates are likely higher and terms tougher... but still worth doing.

You know, even with my infamous punning, I just COULDN'T make THAT title up!!:D

Rudy Eggman did not draw BETTY BOOP very well. Steve Worth (BigShot) showed me an in-house pun from Fleischer Studios of a really badly done Betty.
An obscure little character says to the BETTY BOOP, "What's the matter, little girl?" "Ugly" Betty answers, "Rudy Eggman drew me!"

As for your puns being "infamous," I suppose "wicked" might apply. :tweety:
Forgive my mentioning this, but I don't think you really mean "infamous" since it means "having a bad reputation, loathsome, or disgraceful."

Ray~

Thanks for trying to upgrade the categorizing of my puns:D . Welllll actually I do mean "infamous" on the basis of my sister-in-law's reaction (burying her face, moaning aloud, or running from the room:p ). And then my "O'talian";) (1/2 Irish & 1/2 Italian) girlfriend will growl/moan and say (and I quote:p ) "YOU are SUCH a goober!!!").

[You should hear the exchanges between myself and my brother and my nephews if you want to hear "wicked" puns:D :daffy: ].

Hola Paul~

Thank you so much for the very kind offer... I'm keenly aware of the risks to not only my physical collection but to all of my pure research material (and as mentioned before, the collection helps me learn ever more). I might end up taking you up on your gracious offer to help...

My goal is to soon get a LARGE fireproof cabinet for ALL the stuff that I would just about sooner die than see destroyed... I indeed HAVE bought several new scanners (back-up computers lurk about here;) so I guess I have one for each). Hopefully will get everything lined out and taken care of very soon, and noooo despite what some people might think, NONE of it is resides in a closet. [The dust-bunnies wouldn't like sharing space with Bugs Bunny!:p :bugs2: ].

[Storing the measly several hundred 16mm cartoons is the real trick for me   ]

My goal is to soon get a LARGE fireproof cabinet for ALL the stuff that I would just about sooner die than see destroyed...You may have thought of this already, but just in case you haven't: I've been told by a lawyer who works with insurance claims that when people buy fireproof safes they don't consider whether or not the safe is also waterproof. So their precious items survive the fire only to be ruined by all the water the fire department has used to quench the fire. Apparently not all fireproof safes are waterproof as well, so maybe you should check into that when you're buying your cabinet.

Chow Hound~

I've been talking to the city of Tulsa about buying that "atomic bomb proof" concrete crypt that they buried that 1957 Plymouth Belvedere in back in '57... You know, the one they dug up last week and which had the four-feet of standing water in it... :D :p ;) :daffy:

[And thank you for your concern and the reminder. Even smoke damage is hideous on paper and acetate. The water damage is frequently worse than the actual fire-damage:eek:. Kind of like what happened to the 1890 U.S. Census...  ].
