...what those other guys said! I recall being 18 and absolutely obsessed with classic animation. Back in those days, there was no way to have these cartoons on hand, unless you had film prints and a projector. I bought 16mm prints of MGM Averys from some suspicious guys in New Jersey for 59 bucks a pop, and could occasionally sweet-talk a local repertory theater into letting me program a night of classic cartoons... but mostly it was catching them unexpectedly on TV, enjoying them, and trying to remember them weeks, months, years later...

You're gifted with access to animation history us old fogies didn't have, back in the day. Circa 1981 (the year I turned 18) I woulda KILLED for something like the LTGC, or a set of Avery's MGM cartoons. Even though there's still a lot of classic cartoons that haven't made it to DVD, etc., there IS an awful lot of great stuff within arm's reach. Don't ever take this for granted! There's a lot of unfunny business in this world around us, but nothing can dampen the joys and fascination of the art of classic animation.

You will help carry this joy on, and help ensure that it won't be forgotten or dismissed by future generations. You'll live to see all the MGM Averys and classic WB cartoons reach their 100th birthdays--and perhaps longer. Many of us will still be around when the classic '30s material hits the century mark. These films will continue to be relevant and delightful: it just takes some inspired individuals to carry the torch and make sure they don't get lost in the shuffle.

I wish you a happy birthday, and I encourage you to keep up the great work you're doing. Your enthusiasm is contagious!
