Hi everybody,
I've searched every online outlet I can think of and I'm having trouble finding a certain book because I'm lacking in specifics--title, editor, etc.-- so I'm trying my luck here. When I was a kid I used to regularly check this book out of the local library every two weeks. It was a compendium of unabridged vintage(?) Mickey Mouse comic strips and it was massive. It had a red cloth binding and must have weighed close to 20 pounds, although my perception regarding its weight may not be accurate because the last time I lifted it was before I hit puberty. I'm not entirely sure of the years it collected, only that it was quite old; the first quarter of the book heavily featured characters like Horace & Claribel, Goofy was still Dippy Dawg, and frequent violent attempts were made on Mickey's life by his various enemies. The later dated comic strips toward the end of the book were definitely before the 1980's, but my memory can't serve me more specifically than that-- it may have been entirely Golden Age strips but I'm not sure. I think the latter half of the book may have been in color. What I loved about it was that it was almost entirely devoid of "the history of mickey mouse" or other such nonsense-- apart from a short introduction here and there it was packed, stuffed, chock full, bursting with comic strips, pure & simple. One day I went to the library to check it out & it wasn't there, and I've never seen another copy since. I'm desperate to find it again but other than scanning the shelves of used bookstore I don't know how to look for it. Has anyone else seen this book? If anyone can give me any clues about it (the title would be great!) I would really really REALLY appreciate it! Thank you.

I think you're talking about Abbeville Press' Mickey Mouse: Best Comics (http://www.bookfinder.com/search/?ac=sl&st=sl&qi=,McaDRxTghu4vR5Zx5ZvTs4oR,E_3741711967_1:17:58) . The 1970s edition seems to be more common today; the 1980s edition had the red binding. The stories have been relettered and occasionally censored, but it's still a very good collection for the price.
There is also another giant book, the deluxe edition of Mickey Mouse in Color (http://www.bookfinder.com/search/?ac=sl&st=sl&qi=rttEivw,bihM,TC.Tw.IcpIuFzQ_5512458739_1:5:16). It really does weigh about twenty pounds. But it's got about thirty pages of the "history of Mickey" type material that you wish to avoid, so I can only imagine it's not the book you're thinking of.
Both are filled with the great work of Floyd Gottfredson. No wonder you were left with such a great impression!
