Only $40 for 75 cartoons. I'm impressed.

Awesome news! So let's see... 45 Woody cartoons (including Knock Knock and Chopin) leaves 30 others. 5 Andy Pandas, 5 Chilly Willys. That's 55. The other two Tex Averys, 57. 3 Oswalds mentioned, 60. "Plus others." 3 Swing Symphonies mentioned, that's 63. "Plus others." Pigeon Patrol, HHSiAH, King Klunk, Scrambled Eggs, BWBBoC"B". That's 68. Leaving 7 cartoons still not known at all, plus the 5 unknown Andy Pandas. My guess is the 7 are mostly Oswalds and Swing Symphonies.

Why yes, I do have too much free time. :)

This is going to be one amazing box set. Seems to have some nice extras, though I'm guessing if there's 75 cartoons on 3 DVDs, we won't have a ton of audio commentaries and the like. But restored cartoons are the important thing. Including some I didn't think would make the box. A restored Boogie Woogie and Siam will be incredible. :woody::chilly::andy::rabbit:

So much love for Universal and Jerry! (Jerry, is there someone specific we should be thanking at Universal, like we do with George Feltenstein at WB?)

So much love for Universal and Jerry! (Jerry, is there someone specific we should be thanking at Universal, like we do with George Feltenstein at WB?)

Due to the selection of the contents, I could never thank enough Jerry.
Being a collector like us, he knows the prints that circulate among us in bad conditions and he also knows what every one of us really wanted to see properly restored before anything.
"The Greatest Man in Siam" and "Abou Ben Boogie" restored is a dream coming true for every serious collector.
"Mirandy" and "Pigeon Patrol" uncut and in good conditions were impossible to find!
I would have never thought to see "Bugle Boy" restored and in an official DVD release!!
Also, the selected Woody are the very best ones.
All the 40s output plus some of the Fifties one (at last a restored copy of "Destination Meatball"!).
I don't think we will have commentaries but I don't care in this case: the price, for 75 restored uncut cartoons, is a terrific deal and the bonus contents I've heard about are already great!

And, believe me, the mentioned b/w Oswald and Pooch cartoons are great. Restored they will be wonderful.

If sales will be enough good, we will also have a volume 2.
So I want every one and his dog to buy the set as soon as it will be out!;) :D
We won a battle with the Disney Treasures. Prepare yourself for another fight, and it will be an easy one: we just have to buy one of the greatest DVD releases ever made and peacefully waiting Universal' decisions.....easy, isn't it?

As an addendum to my previous post, the press release from Universal is hitting the wires, and notes that it features eight Academy Award nominees.

Merry Old Soul, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Dizzy Acrobat, Musical Moments from Chopin, Crazy Mixed Up Pup, and The Legend of Rockabye Point are already confirmed.

If I had to guess, I'd say the other two are Andy Panda cartoons Fish Fry and The Poet and Peasant.

I am one of the happiest people right now :)

Glad to see Universal is allowing a new generation to enjoy some of the best swing, musical, and most creative cartoons ever made.... and to familiarize them with the great antics of the REAL Woody Woodpecker (as opposed to that toned-down, neutered, cookie-cut version that was rejuvenated a few years back).

"Abou Ben Boogie" is my very favourite Swing Symphony.... and to think it will be restored onto DVD..... somebody pinch me, QUICK!! "Pass The Biscuits Mirandy" was the last Swing Symphony for me to see and the hardest to find... I have yet to see a print that wasn't washed-out, overlaid with a timing spool, and jittery due to tracking.... I am pleased!!!

And if there's ever been any question as to content that parents are worried about, well, instead of parents sitting their kid down in front of the TV and playing the DVD as they walk out of the room and then come back in, ready to write a complaining letter because they're shocked at what they see, try this instead:

Take the time to sit with your kids, watch the cartoons together, and explain anything they ask about.... and leave the accountibility OFF OF the DVD manufacturers.... Let them do their job, and you do yours. :chilly:

Now don't get me wrong, I am absolutely elated that Universal is finally putting out this wonderful DVD collection of Woody and his pals. I do wish, however, that the cover art would have reflected a "1940's classic cartoon feel". I hate to say this, but that image is dangerously close to looking like a cover for a public domain dvd.

True, it does look very modern and kiddified, but as with the Golden Collections, if the most we can argue about is the awful cover art, then we're headed in the right direction. :)

Yes, yes, YES! I've been a fan of the Walter Lantz library ever since Thad began his blog last year, and now I finally get to see them in a format much more pristine than middle-quality YouTube videos of heavily-scratched videotapes from over 15 years ago. Just the knowledge that the set contains every Woody cartoon from "Knock Knock" to "The Great Who-Dood-It" is enough to get me excited (that means I'll also be getting "The Barber of Seville", "Who's Cookin' Who", "The Coo-Coo Bird", "Bathing Buddies", and "Wild and Woody" among others), but the news about the uncut inclusion of such Swing Symphonies as "Abou Ben Boogie" and "The Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company 'B'" just seals the deal - I've always wanted to see these cartoons as they were meant to be seen. Bravo to Universal and Jerry Beck for what's shaping up to be an excellent DVD set!

Having had somewhat of a hand in this, I am really delighted to see the Walter Lantz cartoons released on a legitimate DVD set.

Lantz has always been my favorite of the 'lesser' studios, and I definitely like the best of those cartoons (most of them included on this first release) better than most of the Disney and Fleischer cartoons.

Please support this DVD set as it will mean more Woody Woodpecker collections in the future. A Volume 2 is dependent on this first one selling well.

Having also had a hand in this, I share your delight, Thad.
A legit release for Oswald's HELL'S HEELS—one of the earliest cartoons to reflect Tex Avery's influence—wotta trip! Uncut Culhane Woodys looking nice and sharp will merely be icing on the cake.

Wow! Two years ago such a compilation would have been viewed simply as a wish list. The best thing about this is that now I can finally get clean-cut, time-codeless prints of "Hells Heels," "Confidence," "Abou Ben Boogie," and "Pass the Biscuits Mirandy," plus cleaner copies of "Hysterical High Spots in American History," "The Greatest Man In Siam," and "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B."

I wonder if any 1929 Oswalds will be included as well? It's be cool to see Lantz's earliest products, especially "Amature Nite" with sound and without that "MCA#10606" tag.

Pretty unbelievable news, making a year full of classic animation relesases ever so bigger. True, the cover could've been better and more classic-looking but it's the content that matters! Here's hoping this sells like hotcakes and we see Volume 2 in the near future! How many volumes would be needed in all, I wonder? Also, with this being a 3-disc set with 75 shorts and an hour or so of extras versus WB's Popeye 4-disc set and 60 shorts and 5-6 hours of extras, would the video quality remain high?

Not to undercut Popeye, but...

This is the one that I really thought would never happen.

WOW!!!!!!! I'm so happy to see official word of this release. Definitely the DVD release of the year, sight unseen. The cover is close enough, at least the characters are recognizable, Lantz' name is on the cover, and it uses the old wood style. So many excellent toons on this set, and I haven't seen most of them in 20 years or more.

On a lighter note... I can't help but notice that the Lantz collection is set for 7/24 and the Popeye for 7/31.

Do you think Jerry is trying to distract us so that we won't post constantly about what the contents for LTGC 5 are? Which is, of course, the traditional July pasttime. :D

Thanks Universal and especially Jerry Beck for those kind of supports for this cartoons and for the respect of their fans. I'm fan of Woody since always and that's my biggest chance to have this wonderful cartoons that laugh me in my youngest in this great DVD. I love the cover art, it represent very well the content of this set. Doing include some commentaries like the Popeye DVD's?

Though not perfect, (and you're right, it IS close to a PD cover) this artwork is far, far better than ANY WHV artwork (LTs, HB, TJ, Droopy) up until the Popeye collection.

Geez, another great set! I'm looking forward to SPOOK A NANNY. I wonder if any of the TV openings/closings/interstitials will be included? It would be nice to see some Lantz Kellogg's commercials, too.

Despite being pretty broke due to college, this is the ONE thing I will scrimp and save for! :woody:
Agreed with previous posts, though. The cover art looks like slightly more glossy version of a PD cover. Poor Andy Panda's ear is dissapearing into one of woody's holes, making his ear look like they spliced it with :mickey: . And Wally must have filed his tusks for this picture! And Woody's neck is yellow? Very PD-looking. Chilly Willy looks cute, though.

Oh well- what does cover art matter when there's such great stuff inside? This is still a great release, and it really is awesome to see both the Swing Symphonies and especially the old, non-tame Woody available to the public.

All I can say after reading this thread is two things...

1) It's about damn time!!!!!!

and

2) This is VERY, VERY good news!!!

Woody Woodpecker on DVD.... my once-believed "pipe dream" actually came true!!! Even the bonus features look quite good. And I was actually surprised at some of the shorts that are going to turn up (like the never-before-seen, by me, "Hysterical High Spots..." and the WWII-era "Pass the Biscuits Mirandy", my all-time favorite Swing Symphony!). Regarding some of the few unknown shorts being included, I sincerely hope "Fair Today" is one... I've never seen this cartoon in my life and would be a neat little "obscure" Lantz short to add to the selection.
I also hope some later-era Alex Lovy shorts are being included such as "Space Mouse", "Bongo Punch", and "Pigeon Holed". :D

One amusing thing to note... I mentioned this set to 3 of my friends who are what I'd call 'casual' cartoon fans, i.e. they'd buy the set but aren't really up to date on the shorts. I spoke with them separately, and they all had the exact same response:

"Will the "If Woody had gone right to the police" cartoon be on the set?"

I laughed and said that if they bought the fantastic cartoons in THIS set, then it might sell enough for Universal to do a *second* set which would have that cartoon.

It's rather creepy how much Bunco Busters has stuck into the consciousness of the average cartoon watcher...

I have not seen either short but I know that Guild/Firelight cut a gag from "The Golfers" that involved an African American man sleeping on a golf course. I have seen images from "Crackpot Cruise" and from what I can make out there are extensive scenes involving African natives (think Tex Avery's "Isle of Pingo-Pongo").

...then again, this upcoming DVD collection will include "King Klunk" and "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B," so they could be included on any potential future compilations.

By the way, for those who *have* seen these cartoons... it's clear that the restoration is the big thing here. Of the cartoons that have been mentioned as being on the DVD so far, which would you experts say had the WORST circulating print? Which is the one that will look the most boggleicious restored on DVD?

For me, I'm thinking seeing a non-washed out, public-domain Pantry Panic will be fun. :woody:

I'd like to say "Boogie Woogie Bugle of Company B". If you watch this cartoon at Thad's blog, there's a noticeable change in print color/quality at various stages of the cartoon. The version on Thad's blog is a combination of two prints of the cartoon. One is from a splicey 16mm transfer and the other is a much-circulated archive print in fair condition. I think Larry stitched these together (hey, it's better than having either print alone or that black and white Castle Films version that was floating around for years).

For the worst circulating print of a Lantz short that will be included on this set, I'd have to say "Pass the Biscuits Mirandy." The print that a lot of people currently own is incredibly bright, suffers from audio dropout, and, on top of everything, has a time-code. The same goes for "Abou Ben Boogie." It has everything that "Mirandy" has except more audio dropout. Fortunately, a black and white Castle Films version of "Abou Ben" has been in circulation (so at least we can hear the sound).

I agree, it's actually one of my favorite 1950s Woodys.

I liked that one too. Other Woodys I liked were "Musical Moments from Chopin" (is this title correct?) and "Hollywood Matador"

So many cartoon classics are coming out on DVD, we'll all have to do some major piggy-bank fattening. And it looks like my Netflix queue is going to be getting a little longer when these 'toon sets come out on DVD this summer...

Hooray!! This set is almost unbelievable! The Lantz cartoons seemed to be fading into obscurity. I can't even remember the last time I saw a classic Woody Woodpecker cartoon on TV (way over a decade ago). Besides the Woodpecker himself, there are lot of people who have never heard of Chilly Willy and I don't think any people I know could tell you who Andy Panda was. Now we're suddenly getting 75 restored cartoons with not only Woody, but Swing Symphoines, Oswald and even Pooch the Pup!

I'm surprised this is only a 3 disc set considering the amount of cartoons plus bonus material. 25 cartoons a disc seems very generous! I can't really complain about the cover art for a set that looks so good (We've seen much worse!), but I did think the characters might have looked a bit better because most Woody Woodpecker merchandise and pictures at theme parks I've seen has looked really nice.

I think Larry stitched these together (hey, it's better than having either print alone or that black and white Castle Films version that was floating around for years).

Yeah, I did. The splicy print was much better looking but had a few huge chunks missing, so I did my best to reconstruct it.

Until I was 'consulted' on this DVD series myself, I wanted some sort of decent copies to enjoy... now it looks like I won't need them anymore.

If my future self had ever gone to my past self and said, "Hey buddy, quit complaining when you watch Abou Ben Boogie... Someday soon it will be released on an official Universal DVD collection", my past self would have checked him into a detox center. ;)

If I have to starve myself for a week, I'll buy this set.

and wondering.... does the uncut version of "The Woody Woodpecker" where he says, "where the hell does he get that stuff?" exist? And will it show up here.....? :woody:

Is "Science Friction" among the first 45? It was the first 45 wasn't it?

Now, if everything that Jerry Beck says is true, is this not the best DVD set OF ALL TIME? I know we'll never know til we get it but hot dang...perfect chronological order, some of Tex Avery's rarest work, Oswald, wartime cartoons, the symphonies etc.

Anyone actually troubled by the price? Seems kinda cheap for such a gem of a DVD set. I foolishly lost track of this thread a long time ago so forgive me if this has already been answered.

Of the cartoons that have been mentioned as being on the DVD so far, which would you experts say had the WORST circulating print? Which is the one that will look the most boggleicious restored on DVD?

For me, I'm thinking seeing a non-washed out, public-domain Pantry Panic will be fun. :woody:

"Pantry Panic" was already presented in a terrific form in one of the Columbia House DVD.
And this copy here will be also restored!!

The WORST circulating prints are "Pass the Biscuits Mirandy" ; "Abou Ben Boogie" and the uncut "Pigeon Patrol".

To be honest, I've never cared much for "Pantry Panic". The cannibalistic overtone of the film and its' fairly gruesome "realistic" ending (with Woody and the cat devouring a moose) just really gives me the shivers. It's one of the few Woody shorts I probably won't watch (James Culhane used this premise to much better effect in "Who's Cookin' Who?" and "Fair Weather Fiends" as those cartoons are more exaggerated and comedic which makes the disturbing premise, albeit with more violent gags, easier to take.).

I AM looking forward to the restored print of "Pass the Biscuits Mirandy". That's my favorite Swing Symphony cartoon and, IMHO, one of the funniest cartoons of all time. There is a gag at every second in this cartoon which never slows down once. The bit where the hillbilly bites the rock-hard biscuit which causes his teeth to slope horizontally is one of the funniest scenes I've ever seen in my life!

I love Pantry Panic. It's the one bit of Woody that has remained outside of the vaults that doesn't portray him as a complete sissy.

Hi Pietro,

do you know how many Lantz cartoons have a special ending like this one?

In particular, I'd like to know if "Hells Heels" got it;)

Those b&w photos were mostly likely from one of the early Lantz TV shows. As we all know, TV in the later 1950's was largely in black and white. ;)

But all Woody's cartoons were in color. In fact, by 1940, all of Lantz's cartoons had switched to full color production... just in time for the rascally woodpecker's debut in November of that year. ;) ;) ;)

Were LAntz and MGM the first Non-Disney studios to switch to full color

I would say so. WB didn't switch to full color until 1944 and Columbia didn't switch to full color until 1947 (what took them so long???)!

I'm a little unsure as to when Famous switched to full color. It was either 1944 or 1947 (I'm thinking 1944 though I've heard some of the Popeye shorts from that year were originally in B&W).

http://lantz.goldenagecartoons.com/1920s/oilswell-end.jpg The special ending titles were used on a few early 1929 Lantz Oswalds only (so unfortunately "Hells Heels" (1930) wouldn't have something like this). I know for sure that they appear on "Permanent Wave" and "Oil's Well".

That's simply marketing strategy. They will reveal more as soon as the release date will be nearer.
They do the same thing with the LTGCs.........

Yup. It's especially true with the LTGCs, where the full cartoon release list always prompts 10 pages of "Where's A Wild Hare/Porky's Duck Hunt/Coal Black/Fiesta Fiasco how dare you leave them off and put on 15 cartoons devoted to Norm McCabe the world is crumbling around us" etc. :) Best to put it off as long as possible.

It's harder with the Popeye cartoons, where the chronological order lets you have more accurate guesses. Assuming another 60 cartoons, presumably Volume 2 will be Popeye the Sailor 1938-1943, and have everything from I Yam Love Sick through The Hungry Goat.

LT and Woody, though, just leave us constantly chattering about what could be on the sets. Which is exactly what they want anyway. ;)

If they just had the announced Woody toons and nothing else I would still buy the set, and it would still be the best DVD release this year, sight unseen.:woody:
