Don't worry, $64.98 is also the suggested retail price for the Looney Tunes sets. I am sure you will find most places selling it in the $45 price range... just like the LT sets.

It's been on my "must buy"-list for a while. Unfortunately, I'll probably have to wait a bit. Since I don't live in the US, I have to pay pretty steep import fees for anything more expensive than $30. So to spread the fixed fee across more items, I'll wait until I have other expensive items I want to buy.

Didn't WB promise two Popeye sets this year? If so, I'll probably buy both of them together with LTGC5 in November.

Wow! I can't wait for this set! I had a 16mm print of the restored Sinbad pass through my hands and I literally lost it over how beautiful it looked (luckily it didn't get on the print). It will be nice to have it on DVD.

As usual, the low point will be the John K commentaries.

As usual, the low point will be the John K commentaries. But Since Bob Clampett, Chuck Jones, and Friz Freleng never had anything to do with Popeye, we at least wont have to worry about the usual "[insert director here] GOOD!! [insert second director here] BAD!!" (unless he decides to drag Disney into the mix).

On another note, I hope that WHV will make a featurette on the restoration on the Popeyes, since this DVD set will make the first time that a classic Paramount cartoons series has ever been issued on home video with the Paramount logos reinstated

Oh man this sure will be awesome! I mean come on quit griping about the price, restored Popeye cartoons are really something, compared to these hard to find bootlegs and redrawns we have been sticking to...I wonder what kind of job they will do on the color specials?!

Myself being a "foreigner", I can undertand your viewpoint. I got the LGTC#4 set via a UK importation service (thereby avoiding a very hefty import free - normally around £10!), so I may have to go the same route.

But I certainly cannot wait to have this DVD set in my hands, so I may consider ordering it near the release date. :sailor:

I can only hope that this will be the final cover art and that it is not changed at the last minute.
Remember when we were shown a half-way decent cover for the Looney Tunes Golden Collection, then it was changed to hideous out-of-spec clipart?
Regardless, I am excited about the Popeye set. Bring it on!

The cover art looks great! I wish the Looney Tunes sets would look this good.

As usual, the low point will be the John K commentaries.
John K really doesn't know much about Popeye. They should've gotten someone like Bob Jaques (animation director on the original Ren & Stimpy) to do the commetaries instead. He's a true Popeye fanatic and knows who animated which scenes.

Well if it isn't a limited set, then you don't have to buy it in the same year. I still see LTGC Vol 1 in stock at many stores. In fact my local Barnes and Noble still has a copy of Mickey Mouse in B&W Volume 2 and that was released FOUR years ago.

This looks like it was clip-art provided by King Features Syndicate, as the image of Popeye has shown up in a lot of more modern Popeye liscenced items. KFS may be calling the shots in terms of box art here, as they own the Popeye characters, so WB may not be able to create their own box art. I like the black/white/orange look of the art (which is remniscient of old one-sheet posters for the early Popeye films).

I'm so excited, I'm almost crying...I never thought I would live to see this day...I have no words to express my happiness...

I thought this set was going to include cartoons from 1933 to 1936. In fact, they go all the way to 1938. That means, we will probably see Goonland on this set + all the best Mercer Popeyes...

As for the cover art, this is, indeed, clip-art provided by King Features Syndicate. I have seen these chracter designs/poses on numerous products, including spinach cans, t-shirts, magnets, even underwear...But, they are truly Fleischeresque and that's amazing...In any case, that's the least important thing...What's important is the cartoons, which are going to look mind-blowing...

It is going to be an expensive year...:)

I did a little research and from what I could gather the first 60 cartoons stop during 1938 and do not encompass the whole year, and unfortunately stop a few toons before Goonland. Oh well, waiting 'til Christmas for it (and Natural Thing To Do) won't be too bad.

Wow! I can't wait for this! I can't believe how cool the cover art looks – this is maybe the first time I've seen a cover for a mainstream cartoon release which actually tries to reflect the spirit, fun and era of the character and films contained within. The ad on Cartoon Brew where Popeye is popping right out the cover looks even better. But of course the really exciting thing is owning 60 restored cartoons with over 5 hours of bonus materials!

I noticed that the clips from "Morning Noon and Nightclub" still have those lines on the far right. Hopefully the reason is that they used an unrestored print for this trailer; the clips from the Sindbad two-reeler definitely aren't from the restored version.

For ads and menus, the studios usually take footage from the unrestored cartoons. Which is why ads for the third Golden Collection used footage from the Korean-version of "Porky Pig's Feat".

Accoridng to Jerry Beck (and the Animation Show) none of the opening titles were faked (apparently they restored a unique NRA-Paramount logo to one of the earlier cartoons.... i'm guessing Paramount was against gun control even back then)

On the upcoming Warner Bros. Popeye dvd, the cartoons have NOT been artificially restored (as had been done on Cartoon Network's THE POPEYE SHOW, or the example you cite of Mechanical Monsters). You will be seeing the authentic opening and closing logos on each cartoon.

They own the Supermans.

Poor Cinderella is in the PD (But as Ray will tell you, there's various legal strings attached to Paramount's PD cartoons such as Music Rights and other stuff). Raggedy Ann is most definitely NOT in the Public Domain, and it's [part of the Republic/Lion's Gate black hole--- er,I mean library.

So it looks like WB and Republic apparently somehow managed to hammer out a deal to get Raggedy and Poor Cinderella (and maybe others) on this set. That's phenomenal in and of itself.

Not really .... it is the same price that you can usually get Looney Tunes Golden Collection for, and from the sound of the recently announced bonus features, it is every bit as fully loaded as LTGC (if not more). For 4 discs, prelisted price is @ $11 per disc ... sounds pretty damn good to me!

Nice Cover, but look at that price for a 4 disc set! That's at least 10-15 dollers more than any of the Looney Tunes sets.

But well worth the money. (I payed only $45 for me... my copy)
