I need to settle a bet with my husband. He says the cat that Pepe always chases is a male, and I say it was never revealed. My daughter says it was a female. Who is right?

Bad news...:p Your daughter is right! Both you and your husband are sadly wrong. The cat was female! :lepew:

Penelope, the cat who was the perennial target of Pepe's antics, was female, but if you still need to win the bet you can play Friz Freleng's "Dog Pounded" where it's Sylvester who gets hugged by Pepe! :)

Yes indeed we know the female cat as "Penelope", buuuuut that was another late, late addition, hence why avoided using the name.

(And I've always loved "Dog Pounded":sylvester).

In Pepe's first cartoon though, "Oder-able Kitty" the cat was male.

And then there's the wildcat in "Wild Over You". I've always thought of it as a female, but is it made clear in the cartoon?

Yeah, but Pepe thought it was a female (he must have been stupid in his younger days, or very confused). It's even revealed at the end of the cartoon that the skunk is married, with children. And he's not even French!! (He's figuratively a skunk as well as literally one too, in this cartoon.)

Pepe also chased after a female poodle once in one of his early cartoons. (I forget the title.)

Is that the one that takes place in New Orleans? I believe it has an O. Henry-like ironic ending where the female cat makes herself reek of limburg (sp.?) cheese in order to win over Pepe, while Pepe has had himself de-orderized to win the heart of the cat. It was narrated by June Foray and directed by Abe Levitow (I may be wrong about the director, but I know it wasn't by Chuck Jones). It's one of the few (maybe only?) Pepe cartoons where he realizes that he smells bad. (He looks up the word "pew" in the dictionary in this cartoon and is crestfallen to learn it's meaning.)

That's the one -- it's almost as if, after over a decade of Pepe cartoons, Maltese and Jones' animation staff were chomping at the bit to break out of the formula the cartoons were locked into by 1958, so that when Levitow was given the chance to direct while Chuck was working on the Bell Telelphone project, they threw out as much as the formula as possible (and made one of the most enjoyable cartoons of the series).

In the first Pepe appearance, "Odor-Able Kitty", the cat was clearly male, but in all other cartoons in the series, the cat is female. Her "official" name is Penelope, but has also been referred to as "Fifi", "Fabrette", and one model sheet I've seen called her "Felice".

Pepe has also chased a female chihuahua, a female wildcat, and in one cameo, Sylvester.
