View Full Version : Favorite Bugs/Marvin Short?

I wanted to do a favorite Marvin Martian short and refrained from mentioning Duck Dodgers And The 24 1/2 Century (don't even get me started on that awful made-for-TV "sequel") since I know everybody would probably choose THAT as their favorite Marvin short, myself included. So I chose to limit this poll to his pairings with Bugs Bunny.
Although neither of the four cartoons (five if you include the also awful made-for-TV Spaced Out Bunny) are masterpieces, my vote ultimately goes to The Hasty Hare. The part on the flying saucer is a little too slow-paced (and I also found it a little odd that the cartoon didn't have the standard "Bugs Bunny In" opening), but the first half (and ending) are hilarious. I also like the cartoon's musical score. It sounds very Star Trek-ish, and even predates Star Trek by about 15 years.

"The Hasty Hare" gets my vote as well. That cartoon is a bonafide WB masterpiece; it has everything going for it. Great sight gags, great dialogue gags, Bugs Bunny at his rebellious best, cartoonish sight gags that are suited to the medium, and, as stated before, a hilarious ending. This is not only my favorite cartoon with Marvin but one of my favorite Bugs Bunny and Chuck Jones cartoons as well.
Also, I'm glad to see other people besides myself despise "Return of the 24th 1/2 Century". It surprises me how popular it seems to be; why??? It isn't funny at all, has a horrible plot, and is generally a mess. Why did Chuck Jones even make that piece of garbage anyway?

I especially hated the way Daffy just turned on Porky at the end with no real good reason other than to be a greedy jerk. Even in his pairings with Speedy, at least he was a greedy jerk from the get-go (so at least the cartoons made a little more sense in that regard).

As for my thoughts on the other three cartoons, Haredevil Hare is also a very good cartoon. My choosing Hasty Hare over it is really just more a personal thing than anything else. Hareway... is decent, but a little too cutesy for my liking (as were most Jones shorts since about 1956). And, of course, Mad As Mars Hare is best described as a certain four-letter word beginning with the letter 'S' that I cannot post on this board.

I would have to go with "Hare-Way to the Stars" because it some very memorable gags in it, including the gag with the Instant Martian trying to out- mimic Bugs, plus I can't help laughing at Bugs' opening line about mixing carrot juice with radish juice.
P.S. I kinda like that "Duck Dogers" sequal, but I'm curious of why Maltase's script was not used, though.

Again, I agree with you, Marty. That cartoon has nothing about it that makes it even remotely watchable. It, along with "My Little Duckaroo", is hands down my least-favorite Chuck Jones cartoon.

HAREDEVIL HARE gets my vote. I love the toony animation of Jones' cartoons of that era.:bugs2::marvin:

Voted for "Hare-way to the Stars." I really like the backgrounds in space, the hovering, jagged walkways, the transparent panels, the architecture in general. Also, the "instant martians" have a nice design to them and I find Marvin to be looking his best here.
Not to mention great lines, such as "Where's the kaboom? There was supposed to be an earth-shattering kaboom!"

"Return of the 24th" is "popular" with people? That's news to me.

Well, perhaps "popular" wasn't the right word but if you go to places like YouTube and the like, Return of the 24th is very common for download while the original 1953 classic is almost nowhere to be seen!

The existance of a Maltese script for it not being used is even more news to me.
EDIT: 1,001 Posts! I've finally reached the point of no return.

The Hasty Hare gets my vote. It has to be one of the zanier cartoons Chuck ever directed.

I love Bugs' wild takes in Haredevil, so it gets my vote.
The Hasty Hare. Chuck Jones + Bugs Bunny = Genius.

I went with Hare-way to the Stars but I admit that I like both Haredevil Hare and The Hasty Hare nearly as much.
I guess I've always really loved the designs in "Hare-way" and the instant martians are great!

Wouldn't Mad As Mars Hare be the last studio cartoon to make reference to Elmer Fudd?

"Hare-way to the Stars". I love the whole look of the cartoon, with its thin red platforms floating in space. The gags are pretty funny, like Bugs and the alien making faces at each other and the hover jet stuff. The music is pretty memorable and compliments the on-screen action well. The ending is a nice twist, with the seeds falling in the sewer and Bugs frantically shouting, "Run for the hills, folks, or we'll be up to our armpits in Martians!"

At least to detractors, if anything counts as a Chuck Jones "showboating" moment, that does.

Hareway to the Stars.
The quintessential Marvin the Martian short.
