Well, we're coming up on April, supposedly Popeye will be out by the summer (let's say August). That's a little over 4 months away and I don't see any news on the WB Popeye release, nor do I see it on Amazon.

Has anybody got word on Volume 1 yet?

Thanks,
Jeff

There's not very much to say about it.
The cartoons are going to be presented chronologically, and the set will include the first two Popeye's two-reelers. It is scheduled for July AFAIK.
We should have the first 60 cartoons or so in the first volume.

It is not like the LTGCs.
We know the cartoons are in chronological order, so no need of any announcement too many months before the release.
I expect more news in May.

I agree with your summation, Andrea, but my "inner nerd" would like to know what sort of bonus features there'll be, what the packaging will look like, the price, the exact street date, etc., etc., etc.

Once this is known, I can then start making angry message board posts about how it did not meet my personal fantasy of how it should have been, the improper use of digital restoration software, the quality of the commentary tracks, the ugly box artwork, the wonky menus, etc., etc., etc.

Then, I can create a blog dedicated to having everyone involved with the project fired, complete with frame-grabs comparing the "botched" transfers with earlier versions taped from TV or captured from bootleg VHS tapes and ever other possible source material that isn't an original 35mm nitrate print.

Well, someone has to do it, right? ;)

Aww Craig! I look at this Popeye DVD this way, as long as they aren't redrawn and they are unedited and on DVD, that would suit a good price. (Even though it would be cool to have the redrawns on a seperate set, but sold in dollar stores  )

I think Stephen W. "Killjoy" Worth would probably beat you to it.

Oh, and don't forget using oversaturated, red-boosted analog laserdisc transfers, and claiming that they "look more like real Technicolor." (This doesn't just apply to Disney, who is a frequent target of this fallacy; I've seen it done with live-action movies before - The Wizard of Oz, anyone?)

Like the only reason to know about a DVD set is the cartoons that are contained on them... sheesh!

I think Craig captured it perfectly with "inner nerd" - and we're all that to some degree, otherwise we wouldn't be on these forums.

Duck, can you say "special features" ? "packaging" ? Heck, plans have also been known to change too, in terms of release contents and dates. You think if WB was really behind this they'd release some information about them on some internet board to build excitement so us nerds can slobber and/or spit venom...

or spit venom...Actually that's a reason that Warner (or any company) would want to hold back information as long as possible.

I know in these days of instant gratification people want everything right now.

As long as Popeye comes out a decent release, than I can wait.

Since most of the Popeye cartoons that apparently are going to be presented on Volume 1 are black-and-white and since Popeye is NOT currently under Disney's control, I don't think you'll have to worry about this, Craig

Well, the Popeyes have always looked pretty good (opening/closings excepted), so there probably won't be any debate like on the sh-tty releases of the classic Disney movies.

In order to have these features appear as they originally were, they will have to be displayed on a dirty screen with a dim bulb in the projector in some small town theater. The sound will have to be crackly with a single speaker with torn speaker paper. Also the film will have to break half-way through and five minutes later be picked up two minutes later in the fillm.

When we can complain about the little things in this forum, we have never had it so good.

I myself don't want anything enhanced. A perfect representation of the original is all I want. Popeye Meets Ali Bab was not produced in Dolby 5.1 nor was it widescreen.

Stated by someone who has no idea what they're talking about and how beautiful the Disney cartoon features look in their original Technicolor.

Agreed, merc!

If they can match the clarity and color balance of Thunderbean's version of "Popeye The Sailor Meets Sindbad The Sailor" on the two-reelers, then they'll have nailed it. And, yeah, let's have a crisp, clear, un-enhanced MONO track, please.

I mentioned VCI's use of DVNR in a separate thread. I saw a sample of their Popeye cartoons release from a few years back and YIKES there is an example of what not to do!

Jerry Beck's early word, though, is that this set will surpass the quality of the Cartoon Network's "The Popeye Show" so I say, bring it on!:D
