My heartiest congratulations to the Tee-Totallers--I mean, the Red Sox--and their fans.

Hope you'll pardon the indulgence, but lordy, what a great series that was.

It sure was.

I was rooting for the Sox and I'm glad they won.

Without a doubt, one of the greatest battles in all baseball history.

(Although I wouldn't have much wanted to be facing George Steinbrenner in conference after game 7.)

Now on to the Series, and may the Curse of the Bambino be broken at last!

(This is my oppinion I welcome all other ideas and do not wish to start an argument or a flame war over it) I want you to think about Babe Ruth. What do you imagine? A homerun king? A great baseball player? Yes, but I tell you what he was not. He was not what you call a sober man, he was full of himself and all he cared about was winning. Now I am sure he cursed Boston but not in the way you think, I mean four letter words, stuff like that. Think about it, in his own mind he thought he was the best player in baseball (and proably was) he was sore at them for getting rid of him after he had led them to victory. But how effective do you think a drunk guy named Babe's curses are? You maybe thinking, "They haven't won a World Series in 86 years." No but I can think of teams that have not won World Series in there whole existance. Are they cursed? Now, I do not have anything against the Red Sox, far from it, they are my favorite team and I will be rooting for them to win the Series against the Cards, I just think the curse is baloney.

Of course, the Curse is baloney. And the whole *idea* of the Curse is a pretty recent invention; it wasn't until the early '90s, after the publication of Boston sportswriter Dan Shaughnessy's book The Curse of the Bambino, that the notion of some kind of supernatural payback for the Ruth trade took hold in the public consciousness.

It's a cute idea, and certainly adds an extra layer of spice to these games, but it's total hogwash. And the bare fact of Boston's championship drought really ought to be enough of a story in itself.

The longest current World Series championship droughts in baseball:

Chicago Cubs - 96 years
Chicago White Sox - 87 years
Boston Red Sox - 86 years
Cleveland Indians - 56 years
San Francisco (née New York) Giants - 50 years
Texas Rangers (née Washington Senators) - 43 years
Houston Astros (née Colt .45's) - 42 years

[...]It's a cute idea, and certainly adds an extra layer of spice to these games, but it's total hogwash.OK, and what's so wrong with a touch of hogwash when it does make the mundane more enjoyable? (There's a cycle that turns in upon itself for ya!)

As for the "extra layer of spice," another facet of the Ruth legend is that his love of food may or may not have been intense enough to burst any 10 lesser stomachs compared with his own. So, spice could have played many roles. (I just wish I could remember the title and author of the short story I once read on exactly that point, although names were changed to protect the gluttonous...!)

George W. as the "I only hate Boston when I have to drive through it!" Geezil

Jay Leno ended the billygoat curse back in 1996. As of last year, Cubs fans have the curse of the fan.

As for the White Sox, they must be cursed too seeing as how they would have won the 1994 World Series if there were a 1994 World Series.

You know what? I'm happy. :droopy:

I was so pleased to see the Sawx knock off the Yankees. I can certainly empathize with Red Sox fans, myself being a lifelong Cub fan. Once they can find a sucker who can take Sammy Sosa in exchange for some solid players, and overhaul the bullpen, the Cubs will be the next team to break their curse.

As for the other Chicago baseball team, their "curse" (The Curse Of the Black Sox) is also a recent media creation. They've actually gone without a World Series title longer than the Red Sox (and have won all of one pennant since throwing the 1919 World Series).

Now let's finish the job, Boston!

Congrats, too, to the St. Louis Redbirds, who just clinched the NL pennant for the first time since 1987.

I like this World Series matchup. Two franchises with long and storied histories, and rabid fanbases. Memories of 1946 and 1967. And it seems appropriate that the team with the best regular-season record in either league (the Cards) should be one of the Series representatives.

Hey, what about the Cardinals? They're goin' to the World Series, baby!

As a die hard Mets fan here In New York and all the abuse and crap I have to deal with Yankee fans every single year, I couldn't be more happier for the Boston Red Sox and especially their fans, as the Sox not only made sports history, but watching the Yankees "choke" was the highlight of my baseball season.

RED SOX IN SEVEN! GO SOX!:)

Man, I'm not gettin much sleep until the World Series is over!! My wife (an Atlanta Braves fan first) adopted the Red Sox after los Bravos washed out. Of course, being a Braves fan she really hates the Yankees, so it's pretty natural that she'd root for anybody looking to end their season. Looks like I've gone over toward rooting for the Sox in the Series now that the disAstros are eliminated. I'm a Royals fan myself...and they're let's say...between championships, so I'll just remember 1985 and watch the redbirds lose in seven. I like the Cubs, too and I followed them most of the season. Sosa just can't see the ball anymore. If laser surgery can't fix him, he may have to retire pretty soon. Anyway, the team I'm really watching close is the Oklahoma Sooners who are just a little overdue for another championship, so I won't be truly satisfied until after January 3, 2005 when I'll be :D instead of :shame: like last year!

So it's Sox-Cards in the World Series.

I hope the Sox win, but it's going to be tough.
