Personally, this is a great film. When I first saw this Jim Carrey film in 1994, I identified with the Stanly Ipkiss character!:o
Back then, I was also shy, known for being a "nice" guy, and I love classic cartoons. If I were to find that mask, those would be the powers I would've had.:D
A great homage to the works of Tex Avery and Golden Age cartoons!:wolfie:

What are your thoughts?

Oh my!! I remember of this movie. It's... amazing how the characters is great!!! Yup!! I already watch the animated series and the crappy sequel but The original Mask is at least the best movie of our 90's era. And yeah, it's a great tribute to Tex Avery works :)

Yeah, I agree. "The Mask" is a great movie. I've met quite a few people who didn't like it all that much (including one person who always complained it wasn't as good as "Ace Ventura") but this film is one of the very few films that effectively combines live-action and animation elements (Who Framed Roger Rabbit being another obvious example) and, at the same time, pays due and knowledgable tribute to classic cartoons.

Even when I was 13 and see it in the threater, I recognized the classic cartoon refs (for example, when Ipkiss picks up the Tex Avery's Screwball Classics Vols. 1 and 2 VHS tapes and thinking, "I've rented those", and also noticing that the cartoon Ipkiss watches from Vol. 2 is "Red Hot Riding Hood").

And, of course, Jim Carrey, practically being a live-action cartoon character himself, was the most obviously choice to play the Jekyll/Hyde type Stanley Ipkiss character. I'm willing to bet Carrey had a field day while filming this movie (and, also at the same time, he didn't have to apply all that excrutiating and superfluous burden known as make-up as when he filmed the abominable live-action Grinch movie). Carrey's talent as a manic comedian has rarely been utilized so effectively.

Jim Carrey at his most annoying and juvenile - I walked out on this back in '94. Almost as bad as Ace Ventura, which is possibly the worst film ever made.

I loved it, it's the only movie I truly liked Jim Carrey in.

... also a nice nod in there by Carrey toward Desi Arnaz's bandleading days, with his rendition of "Cuban Pete." :D

I love The Mask as well. And I like Jim Carrey but he does star in alot of mediocre movies.

Am I the only who thinks that Carry would make a good Bob Clampett, if WB ever decide to make film about Termite Terrance (though this idea is highly unlikely)?

I would like to see that.
I can imagine the scene now, (if the directors and Looney Tunes interacted...), Carry as Clampett directing Daffy in "Book Revue"on a live set.

Carey as Clampett, Sam Neill as Chuck Jones, Brad Garrett as Frank Tashlin, John Cusak or Edward Norton as Bob McKimson, Danny DeVito as Friz Freleng, Jon Lovitz as Art Davis. Directed by Joe Dante.

I'd pay twelve bucks to see that in theaters!

I tried something in photoshop...
(sorry for not letting this thread die, I just think it would be a great idea for a film...)

Heeey...OK, so this is going OT, but this idea I like! I mean, other animation studios did a few "Behind The Scenes" movies of their own, I think, like Disney, Hanna-Barbera and Walter Lantz, all with their creators mingling with their creations. So it's kind of a surprise as to why Warner Bros didn't get in the act.
If done right, and treated everyone properly, this could be pulled off very well.

And neat photoshop image, JPox. Almost thought that was a real "recently discovered" photograph! :D
