I'm posting this thread because I'm curious about your opinions on who was the better foil for Speedy Gonzales.
I'd personally go with Sylvester because he was more of a natural adversary. I just can't see ducks chasing mice (unless there's some behavior I haven't heard of). I go  when I think of the Daffy/Speedy shorts, mostly becuase they don't seem to fit.
Vote for Sylvester or Daffy Duck.

Well of course, I had to go with Sylvester. Cat's eat mice. Ducks don't. And I hated Daffy's character in these cartoons. He should have been retired like the rest of the classic stars.

Do you really have to ask? Sylvester, all the way!!!!
Sylvester is actually a likeable foil for Speedy, whereas Daffy was seemingly just shoehorned recklessly into the plot in all the Speedy cartoons he was cast in. I still stand by my opinion that many of the best Speedy shorts ("Speedy Gonzales", "Gonzales' Tamales", "West of the Pesos", etc.) featured Sylvester as his nemesis. And as for the WORST Speedy cartoons... well, you can imagine the rest. ;) :D

I will have to concur with the other two folks. Though I have not seen the Speedy and Daffy cartoons yet, due to what people have said I am not exactly trying to find them.
Also, I can predict what everyone else who replies will say. :sylvester

I think that the Daffy/Speedy pairing was the worst pairing ever done in ANY cartoon. Can anyone think of one worse?
It's a pity they don't have razzies for worst animated short subject. Many of the Daffy/Speedys would fit in this category.

Daffy Duck didn't chase Speedy G because he wanted to eat him, but wanted to get rid of him or did a job like in Daffy rents or Feather finger.
The Daffy/Speedy pairing could have been as successful as the Donald/Chip and Dale pairing, but the poor animation, the bitter personality of the once wise quacker ruined the whole thing. IMO with better animation and better music some of those shorts could be real hits...
As for Sylvester, I'm not a big fan of his pairing with Speedy. They are not natural foes at all, because what an american cat is doing in a mexican layout? (Daffy also has the same problem).
IMO those starving mice want cheese from factory, but Sylvester guarded it, and Speedy saved the world, and loved everyone's seester gags were just simply boring in their cartoons. The best ones came with original ideas like Mexican boarders or Gonzales Tamales.
The best Speedy shorts are where he wasn't paired with neither Daffy nor Sylvester. Tabasco road, Tortilla flaps, Mexicali shmoes primarily.

I pretty much agree with everything he said. Which is why I'm not even going to vote in this poll.
Daffy himself, in Moby Duck and A Taste Of Catnip, acknowledged the fact that ducks don't eat mice. And really, aside from Catnip... (which is another story altogether), I don't think there was ever a D/S cartoon where Daffy went after Speedy to catch a (literally) quick bite to eat. Although there were a few (Well Worn Daffy and Assault and Peppered, for example) where he basically went after Speedy for no logical reason at all.

What I like about Speedy is that he doesn't have to be anchored to :sylvester or:daffy: . He had other one-shot adversaries like El Vulturo, Jose & Manuel the Mexicali Schmoes, soem alley cats along Tobasco Road, Bandito Pancho Vanilla, and of course Benny & George.
I think Speedy would be a much more beloved character today if Freleng and McKimson had paired him less with :sylvester or:daffy: and more with other sorts of opponents.

Agreed. They didn't have to go with either of them. I was mostly focusing on both of Speedy's main foils though in this one.

Well, I dunno. Speedy is a rather one-note character (as Leonard Maltin put it) so, while he could work against one-shot villains, I feel that his cartoons are more interesting if he has a stronger, more established character like Sylvester as his nemesis (plus, it would be good for Sylvester to square off against another foe besides Freleng's Tweety or McKimson's kangaroo/giant mouse, Hippety Hopper).
My vote is for Sylvester.
Although I did like when Speedy went up against one-shot villians. The various cats and crows have always made me laugh!

I like Daffy better as a foe. I think it might come from the fact that the first Speedy Gonzales cartoon I saw featured Daffy Duck. I wish that the Speedy disc on the Golden Collection had one or two more daffy cartoons (maybe save a few of the better pre-1964 cartoons for later sets so that fans of the pre-1964 Speedy shorts can see them on later sets).

To each is their own. I was initially entertained by the Sylvester/Speedy shorts very greatly (my first was "Nuts and Volts" on Nickelodeon). But the Daffy/Speedy shorts always irked me.
They did however go against the flavor on some occassions, such as having Daffy and Speedy be friends in "Skyscraper Caper," which was one of the better ones. That and "A Taste of Catnip" were the two in my opinion that were worth watching.
Definitely hands down Sylvester was the better foe. In some of those Daffy/Speedy cartoons, you wish you could transmogrify yourself into the TV set and beat the crap out of Daffy because he was such a jerk.

Many people like "Taste of the catnip". IMO it's a horrible and pathetic excuse factory of the D/S pairing. Instead of releasing these craptastic shorts, McKimson, Freleng and the team should have put more effort for detuning Daffy's evilness and make more sensible humor in those cartoons.
The best foil would be a time machine and a vat of battery acid so we could do away with any trace of Speedy Gonzales cartoons, resulting in discussion of something else besides him here.

Thad, I know everyone has their own opinion for the Speedy Gonzales cartoons, but isn't that a little harsh and inapprorate for this thread?
Anyway, I choose Sylvester since his cartoons are more funnier and better than the way out of charater Daffy.
