In June, Inkwell Images will celebrate its 10th anniversary. That same month, I will have hit my 40th year since I got my first professional break. That was the incident when Max Fleischer wandered in during my interview at Jam Handy.

-Also 50th anniversary of most Terrytoons´characters created under Gene Deitch´s regime: Tom Terrific, Clint Clobber, Gaston LeCrayon, John Doormat... and Ernie Pintoff´s Flebus.
-40th anniversary of Jay Ward´s George of the Jungle (and Super Chicken and Tom Slick). This would be a golden chance to issue a DVD with the entire series, but I´m afraid it won´t be so because of the forthcoming new GOTJ series made by Studio B.
-40th anniversary of Hanna-Barbera´s Birdman and the Galaxy Trio, The Herculoids, Young Samson and Goliath, Shazzan and the first Fantastic Four animated series.
-30th anniversary of Disney´s "The Rescuers" and of Richard Williams´"Raggedy Ann and Andy".
-75th anniversary of Disney´s first color cartoon, "Flowers and Trees". Oh... and also 75th anniversary of Warner Brothers´ :buddy:Buddy.

By the way, Leviathan, what do you mean by saying that Ruff and Reddy would have gotten a DVD "if it weren´t for the stupid WB lawyers"? Are there any legal problems involving these characters?

Gawrsh! I forgot it´s also Goofy´s:goof: 75th anniversary! (He first appeared in the 1932 short "Mickey´s Revue").

1947 was a superb year for MGM cartoons. CAT CONCERTO, KING-SIZE CANARY, THE INVISIBLE MOUSE, SLAP-HAPPY LION, DR. JEKYLL AND MR. MOUSE, HOUND HUNTERS, CAT FISHIN', RED HOT RANGERS, UNCLE TOM'S CABANA...

It's hard to believe these cartoons will all celebrate their 60th birthday (of their release date). Many of them were created during 1945 to early '46, but the public didn't see 'em 'til '47.

1947 was also a super-fine year for Warners cartoons. With four units turning out cartoons, there are some gems in the WB '47 catalog. That year also saw some very nice-looking Lantz and Columbia offerings as well.

Then, of course, we have the Famous and Terrytoon offerings. Famous' cartoons still looked pretty good in '47; the downhill slide hadn't begun yet. Terrytoons offered Heckle and Jeckle's rise to prominence, which gave their cartoons a temporary shot in the arm.

Ironically, the least interesting cartoons of '47 might be the Disney shorts. That wasn't the best period for their short subject department.

Overall, though, 60 years ago was a fine time for theatrical animation. The percentage of high-quality cartoons, both in content and presentation, is impressive.

There was at least one great Disney cartoon (http://classicanimation.blogspot.com/2007/01/disney-pathos-donalds-dilemma.html)released in '47. Roughly around 1947-1952, the art of animation was at its peak.

By the way, Leviathan, what do you mean by saying that Ruff and Reddy would have gotten a DVD "if it weren´t for the stupid WB lawyers"? Are there any legal problems involving these characters?

WB Legal supposedly has a strict "no-Dates" mandate which prevents the commemoration of any cartoon anniversaries, or even mentioning any dates in Corporate-authorized products.

Plus after the underperformance of the Yogi and Huck sets have made Ruff and Reddy unappetizing, but the semicentennial of the Hb-studio would've given Ruff and Reddy a fighting chance with a little marketing

Does the current WB management purposely set up their cartoon library so they can fail?

Try watching Ruff & Reddy some time to see if it's worth a DVD set, anniversary or otherwise. It's just a knockoff of Crusader Rabbit and Rags!

Try watching Ruff & Reddy some time to see if it's worth a DVD set, anniversary or otherwise. It's just a knockoff of Crusader Rabbit and Rags! So what? The Looney Tunes were knock-offs of the Disney cartoons, but they slowly turn out to be finest cartoons in history. Ruff & Reddy desevere a DVD as much as Looney Tunes since it began one of the best (and sometimes worse) TV animation studios in history. Besides, I really want to see the whole series since the show has rarley rerun on telvision due to it's contuing serial format. It may not be as good as Yogi or the Flintstones, but it's importaint since it open the doors to later series. Also, do you expect the studio to produce full animation with just a limited budget?

Ruff & Ready was a trial run. Nothing more. If you want to watch it, swell. Eventually it'll probably be released, but your hostility is ridiculous. Especially when it's being used defending a cartoon of that quality.

2007 marks the 70th anniversary of Huey Dewey and Louie's 1937 sunday comic strip debut (their film debut would be in 1938's "Donald's Nephews"), and the 40th anniversary of Scrooge Mc Duck's first starring appearance in animation, "Scrooge Mc Duck and Money" (1967).

You forgot Moby Dick and the Mighty Mightor, the first Spider-Man animated series, and Batfink.

You´re right about Moby Dick and Mightor; sorry about that. But someone else already had mentioned the first animated Spider-man, and that´s why I didn´t mention it. As to Batfink, didn´t he premiere in 1966? (according to some sources).

More anniversaries:
-40th anniversary of Super President
-40th anniversary of Rocket Robin Hood
-50th anniversary of The Kitten´s Scribblings, Toei Animation´s first short, which paved the way for Japan´s huge animation industry
-60th anniversary of Disney´s Fun and Fancy Free
-25th anniversary of The Secret of N.I.M.H., Don Bluth´s first (and for many of us, best) feature
-30th anniversary of Hanna-Barbera´s C.B. Bears (yeah, I know, way back in 1977 H-B´s golden times were long gone by then, and the Blast-Off Buzzard segments were nothing but a Roadrunner and Coyote clone, but this show tried at least to return to the classic 7-minute format, which they had mastered so successfully in their early years)
-30th anniversary of John Hubley´s death and of his final production, "A Doonesbury Special" (I have never seen this one and, being a fan of Garry B. Trudeau´s strip and of Hubley´s other works, I wish they issued it on DVD)

This one is more personal and definitely not Classic Animation related but........ January 1, 2007 was the 10th anniversary of me having a comic strip published in a local newspaper. My character Smudgebottom made his big debut on that day. I put an old strip of his on my blog (http://dmgermain.blogspot.com/2006/05/very-old-stuff.html) back in May (that's not the one that got published). The strip didn't even last a month there (although I did keep drawing it long after the newspaper itself went bankrupt) and I cringe at how badly it was drawn. But, I'm still proud of that milestone. :D

Also not classic, but animation related. 2007 is the 10th anniversary of the movie 'Cats Don't Dance' by Turner Features. Theatrical run was in late March 1997. :)

60th anniversary of the first WB Academy Award cartoon "Tweetie Pie" and 50th of one of my favourite cartoons "Birds Anonymous".
As I pointed out on my other thread, it's also the 60th anniversary of the discovery of Elizabeth Short's (AKA the Black Dahlia) body in a vacant lot in LA, one of the most infamous unsolved murders in LA history.

This isn't animation related but I think it deserves a mention. May 5 of this year is the 25th anniversary of John Belushi's untimely and unfortunate death (http://www.answers.com/topic/john-belushi). Despite his flaws and objectionable behavior, you cannot deny how great an entertainer he was. :)

This is more comic strip related than animation related, but this year marks the 50th anniversary of "Andy Capp."

Another comic strip-related anniversary which may be almost unnoticed in America, but which is going to inspire a whole series of events and celebrations here in Europe: 2007 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Hergé, the great creator of Tintin. Billions of blistering barnacles!

I thought Lou Costello was born in 1907 so I wanted to say that this was the year he would have turned 100. However, IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0182579/) lists his birth year as 1906. Which is right?

I believe that tomorrow, January 28, will be the 30th anniversary of "THE BLIZZARD OF '77." Any Buffalonians of a certain age will remember this insane milestone in the history of Western New York weather.

(Semaj and Thad - ask your folks about it!)
