A little known fact that even a lot of cartoon historians probably don't realize is that Beans Cat was actually intended to be WB's big star after giving Buddy the boot. Of course, Porky Pig wound up unexpectedly steeling the show (and the rest, they say, is history). And as with Egghead, Beans was never even able to really develop much of a personality.
Nevertheless, which of his nine shorts is your favorite? Cameo shorts don't count, by the way.
I voted for Golddiggers of '49, btw.

Gold-Diggers, the first WB short by Avery and a short that marks a transition into Avery-style humor for the studio.
Why didn't Beans become a star? Beats me. Sometimes there's no explanation why certain items (characters, music, gadgets) catch on with the public and some do not.

Lack of an alliterative name, of course!

Possibly because he lacked personality...

Later this month on TCM, Cartoon Alley will devote an entire episode to Beans, so that should be worth setting your vcr or dvd to record this one.

That attempt at a catch line 'one of the Boston beans' was pretty lame and I'm sure it didn't help his lack of popularity, plus he looked very generic and bland.

I also think Jack King's direction didn't help, if it wasn't for Avery, Porky Pig would've had the same fate as Beans!

Although I have only seen I Haven't Got a Hat, Hollywood Capers, Golddiggers of '49, and Westward Whoa, Golddiggers is by far the best.
