Last night (Sunday 11/26/2006) on GSN [f/k/a Game Show Network] showed a behind-the-scenes one hour documentary on the 1970s TV series "Match Game". It was basically a very good one at that, but the most surprising remark that I heard on the special was when one of the former staff members said, in reply to the risque questions on the program, "There was a time that CBS stopped showing Bugs Bunny on TV because he had no pants".

Then, two still images were shown on the "Match Game" special, one featuring Bugs and Daffy Duck from the hunting triology series, and the other with Bugs on top of his name from a mid-1950's title card. I did a double take myself when those two pictures came up on the screen.

The special will be repeated on GSN this Tuesday 11/28/2006 at 9:00pm Eastern/Pacific. For the curious Warner Bros. cartoon buffs out there, I suggest you watch for it just look at those Bugs Bunny images for being in the special.

That's interesting. I heard Donald Duck was banned in Finnland once for not wearing pants as well. I'm surprised people don't really notice that none Disney cartoon characters are kinda all natural if you get the idea.:p

I wonder if anybody in America has ever thought of banning Daffy Duck since he's a black duck AND generally the antagonist of his shorts. :daffy:

We should actually devote a whole thread to the hilarious ways people could censor these cartoons.

Yeah that would be an interesting thread. And also some images that are a bit ironic in certain ways too.(sorry if I was off topic)

I heard that too.

I saw that, too. However, I think he might be mistaken. Ever since the start of the prime-time Bugs Bunny Show, all the way to the end of the CBS Saturday morning run (when it switched over to ABC in the late 80s or early 90s), I believe Bugs was on CBS every week for the entire time.

Anyone have more concrete info on this?

Here in Finland, that has been spoken a lot about of course, but it is not really true. http://www.snopes.com/disney/films/finland.htm

Okay sorry for the missunderstanding. I read that once in a Disney magazine so I guess that they overreacted alittle. It's still a little confusing though. I'm pretty sure some people and cultures might still feel offended by certain things about cartoons.

Meanwhile, OT and back in 1980, Marvel Comics' Howard the Duck was indeed ordered by Disney (IIRC) to start wearing pants, and Marvel quickly complied.

Thanks! :)

So there were periods where Bugs was not on CBS, but it was due to network switching and not censorship.

And yes, I'm a big fan of Match Game!

there was a time when LT cartoons were

airing on 2 networks, in the late 70's.

On CBS as well as NBC, that ran the daffy duck show, that showed some Bugs bunny toons, most of the cartoons that ran here, were mostly staring daffy with speedy. most that aired here were from the 60's era of Termite.

CBS still ran the BB/RR hour in some ares thru the 87 season, and in 89 pulled all the fat albert toons from USA network to rerun for the rest of the 89/90 seaons.

Well, "Match Game" is a great TV game show, no doubt, and there is now even a four-disc "Best of" DVD box set being sold right now (which I have my own copy), although my all-time favorite game show is really the vintage-1970's editions of "Pyramid". I remember that "MG" sometimes used Looney Tunes characters in their questions and responses.

There was this one time I remember, I recalled regular panelist Brett Somers once asked in an episode as to what did Elmer Fudd looked liked. Host Gene Rayburn would have tried to explained to her, but he did not because he feared it might have revealed a possible answer to a question he was asking.

I once made a joke to myself a few years that one of these days, being with the crazy state of GSN programming , I would not be surprised that I would hear a staff announcer saying, "You're watching Looney Tunes...on GSN - The Network of Games". As I said, I did a double take when both Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck appeared in that "Match Game" documentary.
