The 1940 Andy/Andrew Panda cartoon where that woodpecker made his world debut.
This is definitely a hit. I bet the audiences were rolling in the aisles when they first heard his nutty laugh. It's also funny to hear Woody in his unrefined voice (a cross between Daffy and an early Bugs).

I vote hit, too. The animation leaves a bit to be desired, but I like a lot of the gags (the beer stein and the multiple wacky woodpeckers at the end are fun). It has Mel Blanc. And I'm one of the few who likes the early Woody design.

I introduced my 6-year old Nephew to this one recently, and he loves it:D Definitely a hit!

Nobody's perfect on their first shot out but I still give it a HIT :woody:
Love it. Actually there's some really great animation by Verne Harding (the beginning and ending in the house), Frank Tipper (Pop chasing Woody around the chimney), and Les Kline ("You're not going to pull that old gag on ME, are ya son?").

I would go with a definite HIT! A hilarious way for Woody to make his debut as the little menace who pokes holes in Papa Panda's roof.:woody::andy:

And I'm one of the few who likes the early Woody design. While the design may be crude, I've always liked it.
I'd call Knock Knock a hit simply because it was good enough to put Woody in his own series.

And like Fibber Fox, I just happen to LOVE the design of the earliest Woody Woodpecker... Cross-eyed with legs like stovepipes with a major splash of the rainbow, hard not to laugh at the character. I DO rate "Knock, Knock" as hit! (Ben Hardaway FINALLY created a top-level character :woody: ).

"Knock, Knock!" is one of my all-time favorite classic cartoons, period... so, naturally, I rate it a hit!!!!
Not only does it effectively introduce that famous woodpecker to the public but it's just a hilarious, expertly-made cartoon all around. That scene where Woody romances the wind-up, rigged-to-explode female woodpecker and then, after it explodes, just feels shunned and "betrayed" is simply a scream!!!
Hearing Mel Blanc in his only vocal performance as Poppa Panda was also a treat.

Mel did Poppa Panda? Didn't know that.
Who did Andy?
I heard Mel did the first 5 Woodys before Warner signed him to a contract, but the studio continued to use his laugh.

Geez, that's a good question (listens to cartoon in head). In 'Knock Knock', it's definitely not Walter Tetley. I think he came a little later.
Didn't Bernice Hansen do Andy at one point? She's in the second Woody film, along with Mel Blanc and his Scottish accent.

Sog, Hardaway didn't design him, did he? Who did? I can guess the answer *isn't* Charlie Thorson ;)

Sara Berner (another popular WB voice actor) was the voice of Andy in "Knock! Knock!". Mel, of course, did Woody as well as Poppa Panda and the other two (asylum attendant) woodpeckers at the cartoon's end.

If I recall correctly, Lantz and Alex Lovy were the original designers of the early Woody. Hardaway, having written the cartoon, probably played a small part in the design as well.
