I think it's high time a pre-1964 Speedy short got its hit/miss due. :speedy: /:sylvester

This is IMO the worst pre-1967 (that's right, pre-Alex Lovy) Speedy short. The concept of Speedy fighting Sylvester in the style of the Spanish bullfighters wasn't bad. But the cartoon suffered horribly from how one-sided Speedy's victory really was. So much sadistic punishment was inflicted on Sylvester, with Speedy being totally unscathed. That, coupled with those mice in the bleachers constantly snickering at Sylvester, actually made me start cheering for HIM (the antagonist) rather than Speedy.

By the way, did anybody else notice an odd continuity error in the middle, where Sylvester tries to jump on the mice in the bleachers and they're able to abruptly run away from him (even though Speedy's supposedly the only mouse fast enough to do that)?

Friz's worst cartoon at Warner Bros., and apparently, the folks puting together the Golden Collection DVDs agree -- it's now the only pre D-FE Speedy short that has not made it onto any of the first four volumes.

Did you have to ask?

I don't think I've ever seen a classic-era WB cartoon garner such a large miss-hit ratio.

And yet, In Chuck Jones' book Chuck Amuck, he listed Mexican Cat Dance as one of his favourite Friz cartoons. Did he actually like this one or was he thinking of another cartoon and misremembered the title?

Hopefully, it's the latter. Or may be he simply liked how Friz recycled animation from his classic Bully For Bugs in the cartoon.

But if that's the case, you'd think he'd list A-Haunting We Will Go as one of his favorite McKimson shorts with its liberal reusage of animation from Broomstick Bunny and Duck Amuck (two other Jones directed shorts).

IMO he thought about Mexicali shmoes or Mexican boarders. But we will never know.:(
