Y'know, I'd never seen this short before getting LTGC4, but it's already become one of my favorite LTs ever. Top ten for sure. In fact, having grown up on a steady diet of the Speedy/Sylvester and a few Speedy/Daffy's, I have to say all of the Speedy cartoons here not dealing with Sylvester or Daffy are incredibly funny.

I agree. It makes me wish that they did put other adversaries against Speedy instead of relying on Sylvester or Daffy. I think they really short-changed Speedy this way.

It actually took McKimson until 1960 to finally use Sylvester in a cartoon with Speedy -- all the earlier Sylvester-Speedy pairings were done by Freleng (whose best cartoon during that time with Speedy was his only one not to feature Sylvester, "Mexicali Shmoes").

I totally agree with you. Neither Sylvester nor Daffy really suited that whole poor Mexican town setting. A matter that wasn't helped by the fact that, unlike Sylvester in A Pizza Tweety Pie, their voices and appearance were never really changed to suit the country in which they were residing. This really kept the Speedy series from reaching its full potential.

There is only one cartoon where Sylvester is acceptable as a foe for Speedy: Mexican boarders. In that cartoon, the Sylvester-Speedy chemistry worked very well, and resulted a really hilarious short.
Other notable one is Gonzales tamales, and if the animation of Sylvester haven't been that extremely poor, I would say I like the chemistry of them in Road to Andalay, even with the strange ending. The rest of the Speedy-Sylvesters are humorless, soulless, boring, and recycled the same gag over and over again. I can't stand the plot when those boring poor mice appear, want cheese from the factory or ship or whatever, Sylvester guards it, they sent for Speedy, he saved the day, blabla. It's OK once in a while, Speedy Gonzales (cartoon) was an OK one, but that's it.
Meanwhile I rate the Speedy-mexican foe cartoons quite highly. Tabasco road, Tortilla flaps, Mexicali shmoes and Pancho's hideaway were all great cartoons, with original plots and funny gags.
As for Daffy, it was discussed zillion times, he was only a good foe for Speedy, when he was doing a job with chasing Speedy, and isn't that angry doofus. Feather finger, Daffy rents or Daffy's diner were good cartoons (despite the poor animation), and I rate them higher than those boring Sylvester-Speedys. Unfortunately the majority of the D/S pairing sucked due to a lacklustre plot, and the fake Daffy.
IMO the Speedy shorts that are worth watching:
Cat-tails for two
Speedy Gonzales
Mexicali shmoes
Tabasco road
Tortilla flaps
Gonzales tamales
Pied piper of Guadalupe
Mexican boarders
Pancho's hideaway
Road to andalay
Daffy rents
Feather finger
Daffy's diner
The rest is just a waste of time IMO. Wild chase is probably the worst piece of garbage ever directed in the WB's theatrical cartoon era.

"Don't stick your tongue out at ME, gato!"
That was just such an out-of-nowhere gag. Great work.
