I wanted to share this with everyone, that since this will be the 80th anniversary of the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade, I'd thought I would present some images of the past famous balloons that have long been retired.

Image 1.The Popeye balloon getting his test flight in 1957

Image 2.Mighty Mouse floating down Central Park West in 1958.

Image 3.The second Superman balloon in 1966

Enjoy my friends and there will be some more images to come.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Here's a couple of classic cartoon characters who appeared in the parade.

Image 2.The Second Dondald Duck balloon floats above Broadway in 1964.

Thanks for posting that picture of the Popeye balloon, Nelson! I'd watch for it every year on the annual TV parade broadcast. And it was so much cooler than the big-head version KFS has these days!

(Sitting through all those floats, bands, baton twirlers, commercials and commentaries just to see this ONE balloon was kind of akin to watching IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD just to see The Three Stooges' cameo.)

Looking forward to your additional pic posts!

(Oh, and HAPPY THANKSGIVING to all our GAC-ers here in the USA!)

According to an article in the Official Popeye Fanclub newsmagazine, the original Popeye balloon can be seen in a color episode of The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
