The "Cinemascope" cartoons shown on the Tom and Jerry episode were zoomed. Detail from the left and right side was missing.

Aside from the blurry images due to the zooming, the cue marks were in different places in the cartoon's end and closing credits.

On my HDTV the picture looked very squished. It had thick black bars on the top and bottom even though the set has a wide screen. I switched the picture to "zoom 1" mode and it looked better. The bars were still there but much thinner. Not being familiar with these cartoons, I didn't know whether any part of the picture was missing.

As far as the cartoons go, they're not the best T&J that I've seen, although I thought "Tom's Photo Finish" was funny. I recognized Daws Butler's voice in "Mucho Mouse." "Royal Cat Nap" was reminiscent of Tex Avery's "The Legend of Rockabye Point" (Lantz), a better cartoon.

I compared Mucho Mouse the the Premier Collection DVD. It was not just a few pixels missing, it was a very large chunk missing from both left and right sides. The DVD was much crisper.

Keep in mind, TCM may be airing the old letterboxed masters that were used on laserdisc, while the DVD versions are in authentic widescreen.

Looking at the two copies I have of Mucho Mouse, it seems my guess was accurate. I believe the letterbox process will always cut off some of the screen. I have seen a Cinemascope Terrytoon on 16mm film that was letterboxed (in Technicolor even!) and this happened.
