I just photocopied some Vintage TV Guide Listings from Cleveland, Ohio from March/April 1959..I have a question about Cartoons in a particular show

Tuesday, March 31, 1959

5:00PM (3) KYW Barnaby, Popeye and Friends (Till 5:45)

1. Who's Cooking Who?
2. William Tell
3. Walter Lantz tells how Woody Woodpecker was discovered
4. Bathing Buddies

The third item is self explanatory but I wonder what the other cartoons were

Here they are:

1. Who's Cooking Who? - Woody Woodpecker & Wolfie Wolf
2. William Tell - Oswald The Lucky Rabbit
3. Walter Lantz tells how Woody Woodpecker was discovered
4. Bathing Buddies - Woody Woodpecker & Wally Walrus

There is also a Mr. Magoo cartoon called "William Tell" but it did not come out until 1964. Since the others are Walter Lantz, I'm assuming "William Tell" is also Walter Lantz.

It was more likely "The Overture to William Tell" a Lantz Musical Miniature with Wally Walrus from 1947 (which was from around the same year as the two other Woody cartoons that were shown).

After looking at the cartoons and seeing other stations were running Woody Woodpecker in the late afternoon i figured it was "The Woody Woodpecker SHow" Channel 3 probably showed this every Tuesday at this point..

I also remember in the early-mid 1960's seeing Woody on WEWS-TV 5 as part of Captain Penny's Shows. I remember Lantz with live action shorts on how to make cartoons, etc. At that time sio it must have been the same syndicated package KYW ran in 1959..

Thanks Jon:
I could have looked these up but I think it's fun to see if people know the answers and get some conversation going

The Woody Woodpecker Show was my first cartoon show and first favorite TV show back in the day. I've got a cool story about it, think it's in the archives. Lemme see if I can find it...

EDIT: Eh dunno what happenned to it but back in the day Woody Woodpecker came on CBS out of Tallahasse every day at 4 AND on Saturday mornings. There was also this dude who walked around Tallahasse every day in this giant Woody Woodpecker suit, patting babies on the head and stuff. I kid you not-CBS promoted the heck out of this show, this crusty old forgotten cartoon show. I even have footage of the guy walking around town in the suit, on tape. He was in all the parades and I *think* he was on the news in some segment for the kids. It went on a long time. This is proof about how Woody is so criminally underrated. His potential to carry the banner for Universal just like Bugs does for WB may go untapped for the rest of his life.

It is truely sad indeed.

Kinda love to see that footage of the suited Woody and all one day! :D

THE WOODY WOODPECKER SHOW was broadcast on ABC (1957-1958) and
on NBC (1970-1972; 1976-1977) and was thereafter syndicated.

Quite possible, given where this guy is located, that the station in his town had to share or pick what to air from the networks if it couldn't be affiliated with one of them. One of Toledo's TV stations used to be this way for a couple decades where I am as we didn't have three stations that could be an affilate of one of the Big Three each until around 1970.

Here in the Chicago area from early to mid-sixties, The Woody Woodpecker Show alternated with The Quick Draw McGraw Show on WGN Thursdays at 6 p.m. After that, Woody moved to WFLD 32 where it ran on its own or as part of Bill Jackson's Cartoon Town show.

Good point. I grew up in upstate New York, and in the late fifties WSYR (Channel 3) in Syracuse shared both NBC and ABC shows (before becoming
a full-fledged NBC affiliate sometime in the early sixties). Unless I'm mistaken,
ABC was in fact an off-shoot of the NBC network. In the 1920s, there were
two sets of NBC radio stations. One was the Red network; the other the
Blue network (so named from the color of pencils used the radio engineers
who drew up the national maps). I seem to recall reading somewhere that
the Blue network evolved into the ABC network.

I used to sit and just stare at Woody and wish he was my very own Woody Woodpecker. I loved the comic timing, the richness of the colors, that unbelievable voice. I am not that saavy about a lot of the cartoons, is it true that the creators's wife did the voice. Where does a person just come up with a voice like that. I mean are you just sitting at the dinner table one sunny afternoon and suddenly you stand up and say " oh by the way I think this..............is the perfect voice for Woody." It is too much.

But yeah, if Universal's gonna have a Woody Woodpecker walkaround, they'd better put his cartoons on a consumer DVD, and do it right.

Never had to grow up in that period unlike my parents, but I assume most households back then probably had outdoor antenna towers capable of picking up channels 2, 4 and 7 easy from Detroit anyway.

This is very true. Wikipedia probably has the full dirt to read up on that.

no.... :(

Thanks for the picks though, I just never had the kind of money or rich folks to go to places like that in my lifetime (I haven't even been to Cedar Point since I was 3).

Seems like a stupid tease to me! I just should boycott any company I find inferior to the things I enjoy.

I used to think like that too when I was a kid. All I had to do was keep saving the money and saving the money until I had enough to travel. It's easier for me since I live on the East Coast, and all I have to do is hop a plane or make that "Big Commute Down I-95".

Plus, and I hope this doesn't make you jealous, my sister has a condo in Florida that she uses during the extended school recess periods. Helps my family cut costs on hotel fees. The only downside is one of us needs a driver's license, which is something I may never get in my lifetime. :(

I can't event get excited over that anymore. I think I've grown past that now.

Best I have is a younger brother who went to Cancun earlier this year, a sister whose in some podunk in Minnesota, and an older brother who happens to live next door to me. I think I'm turning into the Chris Elliot character on "Get A Life" already!

She supplied the voice but tweaking in the studio gave you what you heard in the cartoons :woody:

EDIT: Heck, that statue of Woody looks like something tou'd find outside of Wal Mart, and that particular statue was in his own back yard. Shame...
