I LOVE "Swing Wedding"... Anybody who thinks that the Harman-Ising cartoons are dull or aimed at wee children needs to be required;) to periodically watch it!!! It IS a cartoon masterwork. :bosko:
[Somewhere I think I have a drawing or two of those wildly dancing girl-frogs:)].
I love "Swing Wedding"! Hilarious and insane cartoon. 'Foghorn' is probably my favorite MGM character of the 30s! "You guess youse goin'?! Boy, youse 'da groom!"

I like SWING WEDDING myself - I have a beautiful laserdisc copy!! I think viewers today who aren't familiar with the caricatured entertainers of that time would have a hard time sitting thru it, IMO.
The ending is great!!

Yep, this is one of my all time faves! I remember rubbing my eyes in disbelief when I first saw the "shooting up" scene! The step 'n fetchit frogs "get the lead out" dance number is pretty hilarious as well. A 16mm print of this film recently sold on E-bay for 230 $, so I'd guess more than a few folks like this masterpiece of musical chaos!

"Swing Wedding" was on my list of Top 50 Cartoons, from earlier this summer. It's a marvel for so many reasons. For one, it shows a drive and dynamism in Harman-Ising's work that was never quite equalled by them anywhere else. For another, coming as it does during a rather fallow period of MGM cartoons, its energy and excitement are an unexpected surprise.
It's truly a cartoon possessed, as frantic as Clampett's best WB cartoons of the '40s. When Harman and Ising tried to make more WB/Avery-like cartoons in the early '40s ("The Alley Cat," "The Lonesome Stranger," etc.), they were clearly trying to tap into that same energy again. I'm fond of those cartoons, but they seem a bit forced.
"Swing Wedding" is wild and free, and it borders on anarchy in its unremitting drive and verve. I hope WHV will put it on one of their classic film reissues as an extra. I'd love to have this masterpiece of late '30s cartoon madness on DVD.
I think they should do a compilation of all those MGM shorts with the crazy frogs (including the Bosko ones)... Of course it would have to be for mature audiences only...

Network censors, soccer moms, and those who have been raised by them. Do I need to continue?

Boy, I'm supprises the Hayes Office didn't notice this. Great Post.
The odd thing is... I remember seeing Swing Wedding on TV (probably BBC 1) in the early 80's... long after it had probably been outlawed in the US - but then again, we still had most of the Censored 11 being broadcast regularly then as well...
If only I'd had a VCR and a bit of foresight in those days...:(

WTBS, Ted Turner's flagship station, had a worn 16mm print that they still occasionally broadcast into the late '80s. They only seemed to run it on their early morning cartoon show. Quite a thing to encounter at 7 AM!
The fact that TCM is running it bodes well for its showing up as an extra on some upcoming WHV release...
