View Full Version : Snagglepuss
I was watching Yogi Bear on DVD and this question came to me, what was the first cartoon to star Snagglepuss the lion? I remember seeing the character on a Snooper & Blabbermouse cartoon once before, but he was orange at the time.
I like his adventures on the Yogi Bear show. And Yakky Doodle is better then what I remember. Hanna Barbera should have used the blue alligator in more cartoons.

I should probably leave this one for Daws Butler Jr., but I believe Snagglepuss started off as an orange lion in some Quick Draw McGraw cartoons (sometimes called "Snaggletooth").

Yeah, I remember that. Although it was in an Augie Doggie cartoon, I think

At one time or another, he appeared in all three segments of the Quick Draw show, but I think his first appearance was in a Quick Draw cartoon. He actually shows up in more than one Quick Draw short.

Before the 32 Snagglepuss episodes that aired on THE YOGI BEAR SHOW,
Snagglepuss (a.k.a. "Snaggletooth") guest starred in seven cartoons, on
QUICK DRAW McGRAW, that pre-date his own series. He first appeared with
Quick Draw in "Lamb Chopped" and returned in "The Lyin' Lion" and (my
favorite) "El Kabong Meets El Kazing." He appeared in two episodes with
Augie Doggie ("Snagglepuss" and "The Party Lion") and in two Snooper &
Blabber episodes ("The Big Cat Caper" and "The Lion Is Busy").

I know he was a big favorite of writer Mike Maltese. Daws once told me that Maltese would act out the whole thing for him with Sangglepuss, where he didn't do that with other characters.
Here's a forum spot I found talking about the old orange Snagglepuss.

I kind of like the fact that he was first introduced as a villain. I had the same idea about one of my own creations back in the day.
Wonder why they chose to redesign ol' Snag with a pink color. I know people have been known to wonder if he has a "choice of lifestyle", not that there's anything wrong with that, but he does love to lead the bacholer life.

Snaggletooth and Snagglepuss are two separate animals. To understand Snagglepuss's lifechoice one need only watch "Rent and Rave."

Sorry, but Snagglepuss and Snaggletooth ARE the same character. In his
first comic book appearance, in Dell's QUICK DRAW McGRAW #5, he looks
exactly like "Snaggletooth" in the early Quick Draw episodes but is called
Snagglepuss. In fact, in at least one of his early guest appearances in
an Augie Doggie cartoon, the title of the episode is "Snagglepuss."
In the biography DAWS BUTLER: CHARACTERS ACTOR, author Ben Ohmart
explained: "Daws' vocalization of Snagglepuss was a direct imitation of [Bert]
Lahr when Snag was a supporting character in the Quick-Draw, Snooper, and
Augie Doggie cartoons from 1959. Don Messick, and others, thought it Daws'
best vocal characterization. But when Snag was given his own cartoon in 1960, Daws completely changed the voice, pushing it into a higher range,
making the voice breathy, taking out the guttural sounds (the trademark
Bert Lahr 'yong-yong' sound), but kept the personality and the rhythm."

In at least one Quick Draw cartoon, Snaggletooth is Snagglepuss' imaginary brother (or cousin? -- I forget). Snagglepuss pretends to chase Snaggletooth, changing personalities each time he reappears from behind a circus tent.

Someone else mentioned Snag's color changing. And it sure did. But, if not
for merchandising, I wouldn't have noticed back then because we still had a
black-&-white TV set. In the Dell comics, he went from orange (in QUICK
DRAW McGRAW #5) to gray (in AROUND THE WORLD WITH HUCKLEBERRY,
which incidentally featured an early, collarless version of Snag on the splash
page of Huck's story but the later collared version in the Snagglepuss story)
to pink (I think beginning in Gold Key's SNAGGLEPUSS #1). Meanwhile, Snag's
picture on the Cocoa Krispies box was drawn to match the way he looked on
YOGI BEAR except he was still colored orange like the character on the QUICK
DRAW show!

In another cartoon with the same chick from "Rent and Rave", she encounters both Snagglepuss and Snaggletooth. Since they are carrying different items she requested, they cannot be imaginary or the same cat.

You could be right about Snag's twin; I haven't seen those cartoons in over
forty years.
