Disney had "The Reluctant Dragon", and the Fleischers had that Paramount "Popular Science" short depicting the Miami studio and the production of "Aladdin's Wonderful Lamp". But it's interesting that, as far as I can tell, Warner Bros. and MGM never produced a film going behind the scenes at their respective animation studios during the golden age. One would think this would have been a natural in the late 40's/early 50's, when Bugs Bunny and Tom & Jerry were at the top of their game. Has anyone ever come across something like this?

Nooooo... Well, aside from the Schlesinger blooper gag-reels and "You Ought To Be In Pictures";). Fascinatingly there's even an amateur reel shot by Johnny Vita (at Paul Terry's instigation) of work at Terrytoons!!

I CAN'T envisage Fred Quimby even for one second allowing a camera crew to record on film the fact that HE contributed not ONE creative thing to the MGM cartoons. [And YES, some people STILL believe that somehow Quimby MADE the cartoons coming out of Metro!!]

Didn't Universal pictures have one also? They had a going Places Travelogue short whcih showed off the Walter Lantz studio. I have never seen it but I think I have seen some references to it.

Honestly, I think the gag reel is good enough - heck, if you want a straightforward explanation of how animation works, you can watch "The Reluctant Dragon". But if you want a funnier spin on it, watch the Termite Terrace gag reel.

Maybe the full gag reel will show up as a bonus on a Golden Collection?

Yes, a 1936 episode of "Going Places with Lowell Thomas" was titled "Cartoon Land Mysteries" and featured footage of the Lantz shop producing an Oswald cartoon, (The Softball Game) I've not seen it yet, though I know film collector friends who have it. :o

Tell me about it... a couple of UK MGM/UA T&J videos in my collection even state boldly on the cover: "Produced By The Legendary Fred Quimby"!

(Legendary for what, exactly? Apart from trying to take the credit for the work of others, that is...;) )

I do recall seing some footage of the UPA team at work in a BBC documentary once, but I don't know where it came from unfortunately...

There are a lot of people in Hollywood that received credit for projects that they didn't do any real work on. I remember Larry Linville talking about how he, Alda and others in the cast rewrote and entire script so that it had nothing left of the original, but the screenwriter who turned in the lame script won an Emmy for his non-work.

You should be thankful that Fred Quimby didn't try to be a creative producer.
