A penny for your thoughts...
Think of any moment in animation history, ask a question about it, and the next poster will try to answer the above poster's question. Then leave a question of your own for the next poster.
To begin:
What if Tex Avery had won an Academy Award during his lifetime?
TnAdct1

He'd probably would have won it for "A Wild Hare".
What if Walt Disney continued working on Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoons after 1928?

There might have been a gala opening of Fleischerland in 1955.
What if Ralph Bakshi had stayed on with Terrytoons from 1967 onward?

We'd have seen a Li'l Roquefort / Fritz The Cat team-up!
What if the coyote caught and ate the roadrunner in their third cartoon?
Mr. Semaj
06-04-2006, 03:38 PM
The coyote will have won, but since there's little to no continuity in the golden age, they will have been back to sqaure 1 in the next cartoon.
What if Walter Lantz continued making theatrical cartoons beyond 1972?
Bugs Bunny

The quality of the cartons would probably have decreased and Filmation might have been producing "Woody Woodpecker".
What if Chuck Jones didn't go to MGM and he went to DePatie Freleng?

The Pink Panther would have had eyelashes and talked a lot. :thinkpink
What if Beans had caught on instead of Porky?
David Gerstein

The Pat Sullivan estate would have sued by 1937. Of course, by that time, Beans would already have devolved into a boring homemaker with a full suit of clothes and a scene-stealing dog.
What if Bill Tytla had enjoyed working at Terrytoons and stuck around to wield major influence?
Duck Dodgers
06-05-2006, 11:22 AM
Terrytoons could have probably developed better quality animation.
What if Clampett would have continued to work at WB?
dandu

There would be more cartoons with the more looney version of Daffy Duck!
What if Fleisher Studios didnt go bankrupt in 1942?
Geezil
06-05-2006, 12:50 PM
It's hard to say what level of quality would have been maintained on the Popeye shorts, but Pinto Colvig might have been kept on as the voice of Bluto (thereby giving Jack Mercer more of a Goofy run for his money).
What if the Van Beuren studio had found another distributor and continued into the 1950s or later?
(OW!)
David Gerstein

Superman would have continued throughout the 1940s. Popeye, unfortunately, might have developed exactly as he did at Famous; the handwriting was already on the wall.

I can't argue with that logic and won't try. Thanks, David. Now, per the spirit of this thread, have you an answer and another question to follow on from the Van Beuren entry in post #11 above? :)
(Edit: Anybody?)

What if Walt Disney didn't die in 1966?

Then the post-Jungle Book features of the 1970s would probably be a little better.
What if Betty Boop lasted into the 1950's?:betty:

She would have been developed in a boring 50s style housewife/slave and she would have been the star of classics like :"Don't Know What to Think, We Broke the Kitchen Sink" and "Vacuum Cleaner Rhapsody".
What if Bob Clampett would have gone to MGM instead of Avery?

Um, folks, the Van Beuren question back in post #11 is still unanswered and dangling. It's yours for the taking. Really. ;)

Those Peanuts TV specials would've been in B&W with a radically different jazz score.
What if Windsor McKay had prodcuced "Gertie, The Sock Monkey" instead of "Gertie, The Dinosaur"?
AardvarkDog
06-12-2006, 01:48 PM
Then Gertie the "Sock Monkey" wouldn't have been the first "interactive" hand drawn animation made.
Here's one: What if, when making the Charlie Brown and Snoopy Series, they had Snoopy "talk" ala Garfield?

You should have not posted your question, and the following poster would have had to answer to mine.

Then they could have adapted hundreds of strips in which Snoopy and Woodstock are the only characters present.
What if Leon Schlesinger hadn't sold to Warner Bros. in 1944?

There would be more Porky/Daffy cartoons during the 1940s.
What if Bosko carried on until the 1940s at WB?

Bosko would have either evolved into a more "looney" character or he would have developed into a boring old "straight man" like Mickey Mouse did.
What if Tex Avery had been a director at Disney?

Pluto cartoons might actually be watchable. ;)
What if Famous Studios kept making Betty Boop cartoons?
Leviathan
06-15-2006, 07:00 PM
They probably would've gotten stuck in Famous' formulaic rut of the early 50's, if they kept making her cartoons that long.
What if Frank Tashlin hadn't left Warners in 1944?
Daff Doc
06-15-2006, 09:17 PM
Jerry Lewis would've been slightly less silly.
What if instead of licensing Superman, the Fleischers made animated cartoons with Batman! (DADADADADADADADADADADADADADADADA) from then Detective Comics!;)
GeniusIntheLamp
06-16-2006, 12:30 AM
Then Adam West would have played Superman in the 60s camp classic ... with Vincent Price as Lex Luthor and Frank Gorshin as Mr. Mxyzptlk.
Now ... what if Columbia's cartoon package had gotten broader distribution in TV's early days?

I've never seen Columbia's cartoons, but I think if they had gotten broader distribution in the early days of TV, the cartoons would be out on DVD and given the royal remastering treatment just like the Looney Tunes cartoons.

That's a good answer, but you now must do a "what if" question.

Oops. My bad.
Here's my "What if?"
What if Friz Freleng never came back to Warner Bros after he left for a time in the early '30's?
Mr. Semaj
06-17-2006, 02:52 AM
Tweety never would've been paired up with Sylvester, and Yosemetie Sam never would've been born.
What if Seymour Kneitel didn't die in 1964?

Fritz the Cat might have had a very different onscreen existence.
What if Felix the Cat had been picked up in the 1930s by a studio other than Van Beuren? (This one's deliberately wide open, so take your pick.) :felix:

By the 1940s Felix would be screaming like Bill Hannah and most likely starred alongside Droopy or something.
What if Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny were created in the opposite order?
Bugs Bunny

Daffy might have been bit more popular at Warer Brothers also Bugs would act looney and greedy and he wouldn't be popular. He would probably star in Speedy vs Bugs shorts in the sixties.
What if Friz Freleng started to direct during the seventies?
Mr. Semaj
06-27-2006, 03:09 PM
He wouldn't have been as well-remembered, with the budget cuts and diminishing interests in theatrical animated shorts.
What if Shamus Culhane directed a Chilly Willy cartoon?
