We all know that a cartoon character's recognition and general appeal is directly proportional to its design and voice, and in the theatrical runs, there's no contest. We all acknowledge such VAs as Clarence Nash, Pinto Colvig, Walt Disney, Mel Blanc, etc., but what about those who give voice to the female counterparts to :mickey:, :donald:, etc.

When listening to modern takes on classic female cartoon characters, the voices are pretty recognizable, but back then, Minnie, Daisy, etc were voiced by multiple actresses. Not very easy to determine a character's personality, is it? The only easily recognized female is Mae Questel who voiced Olive Oyl and Betty Boop simultaneously.

Most of these VAs went uncredited and through dedicated searches we can approximate who voiced what, but this particular mystery will take an extra special approach to unravel, I'd wager.

One answer to who voiced Minnie Mouse is Marcellite Garner, located on the IMDb at http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0307732/, although some of those credits may be wrong, as I don't think Minnie spoke in "Plane Crazy".

Another link that lists a lot of female voice artists is here:

Plane Crazy was made as a silent cartoon, but when it was released in '29 as a sound short, she was given the lines "Who Me?" though I don't know who read them.

Marcellite Garner was an inker at Walt Disney Studios and came to do Minnie's voice throughout the 1930s. I don't know what happened with her after that since the cartoon appearances of Minnie after 1940 do not seem to have her voice.

Sarah Berner and Bernice Hansen did the childlike voices usually used for bunnies and mice heard in the Warners and Lantz cartoons. BErnice Hansen was the voice of SNIFFLES, as an example. Actress Rochelle Hudson was the voice of BOSKO'S girlfriend, HONEY. While Mae Questel is the best known voice performer for BETTY BOOP and OLIVE OYL, Margie Hines did these characters also. Margie was the first BETTY BOOP voice used in DIZZY DISHES (1930). She was one of the five women hired to do the voice and/or appear as a live representation of BETTY BOOP at Vaudeville and movie theaters. The five women portraying BETTY BOOP were Kate Wright, Bonnie Poe, Ann Rothschild (Little Ann Little), Margie Hines, and Mae Questel. I've only been able to determine three of the voice performers in the various cartoons, those being the ones done by Questel, Hines, and Poe. It is Bonnie Poe who appears in the entry of HOLLYWOOD ON PARADE about a wax museum. She appears as a figure of BETTY BOOP come to life. Hearing your talk and sing connects her with the majority of the BETTY BOOP cartoons made in 1933. This appearance of Bonnie Poe has been mistakenly identified as Helen Kane for many years, which would not have happened since Helen Kane sued over the impersonation of her as BETTY BOOP. Any such appearance as BETTY BOOP would have negated her claim.:betty:

That's right. I meant Honey. By that token, Honey's full name was Honey Graham Cracker. Her middle name was after father, Alexander Graham Cracker an employee of Nabisco! That's how the "Cookie crumbles!" How unforunate!:bosko:
